Dear Heather … Can you really be fit and fat?

Dear Heather, I enjoy reading your blog regularly and I have been tempted to send you a question in the past, but I always refrained. Now I’m biting the bullet and I’m sending you a question that I’m really curious about. I am basically in good health. I exercise regularly – 4 to 5 times a week. I enjoy riding my bike and walk every chance that I get. I play sports with my boys (they are 14 and 17) and I have low blood pressure and low cholesterol. The problem is I am 5’4 and I weigh about 220 … Continue reading

Spring Forward to Action Week 3, Day 4: Turning Down Free offers

There was a special going on at a local fitness club this week and they called to invite me in to enjoy the benefits of this special offer. For a few minutes of my time, I could go in and enjoy a ten-minute tour of the facility. During the tour, they would give me all the reasons why their club is the place for my business. Then, if I happened to be interested, I could sign up for a membership without any registration fee and pay a bargain basement price of $30 a month. Sounds like a great deal right? … Continue reading

Spring Forward to Action Week 3, Day 1: Where Are We?

Has it really been two full weeks since we got started? I’m thinking it’s time for a change. I’ve said from the get go that this year’s Spring Forward to Action program is about building endurance and regaining my personal strength. Since my surgery in February, my energy levels flag pretty quickly and it’s important to me to get back that level of energy once more. So What I Am Doing? I started off with my regular walking program, yoga and some strength training. This week, we’re kicking all of that in the head and we’re ramping this program up … Continue reading

Memberships: Why is it so Hard to Cancel Them?

The frustrating part about becoming a member somewhere is that when you want to leave – it’s a lot harder than it was to join. In fact, sometimes it’s nearly impossible. I’ve had memberships where you were required to fax in a letter stating you were terminating the membership and then you would have to give them thirty days in which to process this termination – if you got billed in the intervening 30 days – oh well. I’ve had memberships where even when you faxed in the paperwork, they claimed to never receive it and you can fax it … Continue reading

Fitness DVD Reviews: Crunch – Boot Camp Training (1999)

Since I was talking about boot camps last week, I thought this would be an appropriate DVD to review for our fitness DVD review program. The DVD is called Crunch – Boot Camp Training. Before I even begin my review, let me say that this DVD is going to stick around for a little while – I want to use it again and that’s an endorsement I don’t make to every fitness DVD out there. There are only a handful that I have every really repeated the usage of – Crunch – Boot Camp Training is definitely one of them. … Continue reading

How to Weight Train for Running & Cycling

Last week, we discussed the fact that runners and cyclists need to weight train in order to maximize their performance and to get the most out of their workouts. Running and cycling are both aerobic training sports and while they can help you stay fit and lose weight, you don’t train your muscles up evenly and that can lead to injuries. I got a note from a reader after that blog that wanted more information on how to weight train if you’re already running and cycling, so this is an attempt to answer that request prior to our Dear Heather … Continue reading

The Fitness Blog Week in Revew for Jan 20 – 26

What a week it’s been. I battled a cold for three days of it with a relatively high fever that kept me laid up and not performing at my peak. It was also a week that my daughter explored her interest in Hoops for Hearts, we went roller skating and I discovered that while I still remember how, mentally, physically, my body is complaining about the motions and the skating. Still, I have to say that overall – it’s been a great week. This is also our last week in review for the month of January. Check back here in … Continue reading

You may also want to check out your local fitness clubs to see if they offer a variation on the boot camp theme. But if you’re still wavering, here are the 10 reasons you should check out a fitness boot … Continue reading
