11,000 Steps A Day

Hey Moms and Dads, are you doing the 10,000 steps a day program to maintain your fitness? You might consider buying a pedometer for your kids because according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, boys should be taking at least 11,000 steps a day and girls should be taking 13,000. Easier Said Than Done Why do they want kids taking that many steps? Simple, they are doing studies and they found in their sampling of 709 kids, that 30 to 40% of those not getting that many steps a day were overweight. Overweight kids are a big deal in our … Continue reading

The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea (2000)

Released in the year 2000, “The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea” tells us the story of Melody, daughter of Ariel and Eric. Soon after Melody’s birth, the proud parents took her on a ship out into the ocean so she could meet her grandpa, King Triton. But Morgana, the jealous sister of Ursula, shows up, determined to take Triton’s trident and rule the waters herself, hoping to wreak her revenge for Ursula’s death. She takes the baby and makes a deal with Triton: the trident for the child. He’s ready to turn it over, but Ariel won’t have … Continue reading

The 39 Steps (1935)

Alfred Hitchcock is known for classic suspense, and his only weakness seemed to be in the tools he was given to work with. “The 39 Steps” is a very old Hitchcock film, made somewhat weaker by the poor sound quality and rough, patchy edits, but that wasn’t Hitchcock’s fault. He couldn’t help it that digital editing didn’t come along for years afterward. Richard Hannay is out for a night on the town. While seeing a show at the Music Hall, shots ring out and the crowd stampedes out of the building. A woman he’s never met before comes up to … Continue reading

10,000 Steps and Counting: I Failed. . .

I had written a few guest blogs on how I was beginning a 10,000 steps a day program. I am not desperately trying to lose weight although that has been a side effect of what I had been doing. And then we were struck with one “crisis” after another. I got sick. . .then my husband. . .then the twins. . .and well I fell out of the habit. That’s what fitness is really: a good habit. We have a hard time getting fit because we don’t have good habits. Breaking a Good Habit However, I have learned that it … Continue reading

Esther (2000)

With the addition of “Esther” to the VeggieTales movie lineup, we see these ordinarily cheerful vegetables take on a story that’s a little hard to recount. How would you tell the story of Esther in a way that children could relate to without getting nightmares? First, you would take a cute scallion and ask her to play Esther. Then you’d cast Pa Grape in the role of Mordecai (although how we’re supposed to believe that a grape could be a scallion’s cousin, I don’t know.) A twist here, a plot change there, and you’re good to go. The king awakens … Continue reading

RS/EQ: Ye Ought ‘Not Procrastinate the Day of Your Repentence’

We are already a week into the new year. How are you doing at keeping your New Year’s resolutions? Have you started yet, or are you putting them off until ‘tomorrow’? Some resolutions may not matter, but others may well have eternal consequences. The first Priesthood/Relief Society lesson from “Teachings of the Presidents of the Church” is entitled “To Live With Him Someday.” President Kimball discusses the things we need to do to return home to our Heavenly Father. As I studied the lesson, one of President Kimball’s quotes stood out in my mind. One of the most serious human … Continue reading

Do Latter-day Saints Need New Year’s Resolutions?

With a new year comes the opportunity to resolve to change and improve ourselves. Every year, I struggle with whether or not to make New Year’s resolutions. Several things deter me, not the least of which is the fact that too many of my past resolutions have fallen flat. This year, however, I struggled with whether or not Latter-day Saints need new resolutions each January. We had a wonderful lesson in church a few months back regarding the power of the atonement. Since then, I’ve pondered ways to draw on the power Christ put forth in the garden of Gethsemane … Continue reading

10,000 Steps and Counting: My Fitness Book Is Not Interactive Enough. . .

I want to note here that the idea to average your steps, increase your daily average by 2,000 and then increase by 500 thereafter was not my original idea. Have you read the book The Step Diet? It is a great book explaining the power of walking to help lose weight. But again, weight loss is only a side effect of my real goal: to get back into shape. However, I now have a problem with my wonderful book. It’s not interactive enough. I have been religiously wearing my pedometer for awhile now. I have been very good about increasing … Continue reading

10,000 Steps and Counting: Those 2,000 Extra Steps

Checklist Before You Can Read This Blog: Did you buy your pedometer? Did you keep track of everything that you ate and all the steps that you took? Did you average the number of steps you take per day in a typical week? If you answered ‘yes’, you can keep reading! I hinted in last week’s blog that we were going to talk about increasing our average steps by 2,000. That’s your goal this week. Take your average from last week and increase it by 2,000 steps per day. When I first contemplated the idea of increasing the number of … Continue reading
