Setting Fitness Goals with a Pedometer

There are many different ways you can set fitness goals for the New Year.  One is by using a pedometer. What I love about these is you can pick them up for as little as $10.  But you can certainly spend much more on a nicer model. One type of goal you might want to set is taking 10,000 steps a day.  If that sounds like too much, you can reduce the amount. Some people like to figure out the average number of steps they take and then set goals from that.  The best way to do this is calculate … Continue reading

Overcoming Fitness Challenges during the Holidays

Life is busy.  There is a lot to be done to prepare for the holidays.  It might make sense to put exercise on the backburner.  After all, there is always the New Year, right?  Wrong. Let’s face it.  We can always come up with an excuse to not exercise and to indulge ourselves in unhealthy food choices.  The holidays are just a convenient time in which to do this. It can be hard to stay motivated during this time of year.  But there are ways to overcome the challenges. First, you just might have to accept the fact that exercise … Continue reading

Fitting in Fitness

This year is the first year that I have all three kids in school. My youngest just started kindergarten. My oldest just started middle school. Because of the different start times and end times, I have about a two-and-a-half hour window with no kids at all in the house. (I do have to visit the bus stop five times a day, but that is another story.) The first week, I wasn’t sure what I would do with myself. The freedom! I had dreams of being able to take a shower without being interrupted, or reading part of a book or … Continue reading

Fitness Gift Ideas for Mother’s Day

With Mother’s Day around the corner, it might be the perfect time to give her the gift of health. Why not encourage her in the way of fitness? Of course, you have to be careful about this. You don’t want to hurt feelings. In fact, it’s probably a good idea to only give a fitness gift if your mother truly has a desire to make changes in her life or has already started to exercise. One of the best gifts you can give is a pedometer. It’s a great way to keep track of your steps and set goals. If … Continue reading

National Walking Day

I start walking and then I stop. Then I start walking again, and then I stop. I know I sound like the “I lift things up and put them down” guy on the Planet Fitness commercial, but seriously, I do this over and over again. I know walking is good for me and every so often, I decided to start a regime. Then, for whatever reason – I get sick, I get busy, I forget – I stop again. (The image was found at Morgue File.) Last time I went to the doctor, my cholesterol was bad, so I know … Continue reading

Focus on Fitness

Although many of us base our fitness on weight and body mass index (BMI), new research from the “Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study” indicates that it’s not as important as making overall fitness changes. So if you want to reduce the risk of serious health problems, then put your focus back on fitness. We can easily get wrapped up in numbers. Personally, I have never been one to say that I want to weigh a certain amount. For me it has been about fitting in a certain size. When I focus less on the number and more on the clothing I … Continue reading

Enjoying a Guilt-Free Thanksgiving

Is it possible to enjoy Thanksgiving and not feel guilty? After all, you may have lost a few pounds or have been doing great on your diet. Does that mean you have to forego all those wonderful dishes, possibly offending Aunt Patty? I plan on enjoying my Thanksgiving meal and not feeling guilty about it afterwards. You can do the same. First, I read somewhere that the average Thanksgiving meal is about 3,500 calories. Yes, that is a lot of calories but that is 3,500 calories for one meal. It would be different if you were eating that many calories … Continue reading
