Picking Pumpkins Part II

After a thirty minute drive in the glorious autumn weather, surrounded by the beauty of fall, we arrived at our destination: The Orchard and Pumpkin Patch. My two children, my little sister, and I met my other sister (she is of course my little sister’s older sister too), her husband, and their daughter. The orchard was very busy with only a week to go before Halloween and subsequently “Beggars Night” (something we do not celebrate with trick or treating). There were lots of children with their parents scoping out the pumpkin patch. After I got the stroller out of the … Continue reading

It Starting to Look a Lot Like Autumn ….

“Mommy! Come see! Come see! There’s a red leaf on the tree!” That was what woke me up yesterday morning and here we are – October 1. Autumn officially started last month, of course, but for some reason it doesn’t feel like autumn until the leaves actually change color or we flip the calendar page to the month of October. What a Time of Year I love the autumn. It’s a welcome respite from the heat of the summer here in Texas. Though, I admit, we only had one really bad month of heat this year. September was very crisp … Continue reading

The Long Route

I tell a joke whenever I introduce myself to a new class and identify myself as “Mrs. Long, not short, but long.” While this joke is very entertaining for the young, it’s also a good advice for those among us looking to find ways to add more physical activity without doing something as arduous as a workout. So here’s a little tip based on my joke. Take the Long Way Too often in this day and age we’re in a hurry to get where we are going. We’re looking to take the fast route. We want to get there as … Continue reading

Spring Forward to Action 2007: Week 2, Day 3

I may have found a bike! That’s exciting news for me. If it pans out this weekend, I’ll be hitting the bike trails over the next few weeks to add more challenge to my workouts and continuing to build my endurance. Daily Goal Today’s goal was to kick up the treadmill routine from 30 minutes to 2 miles. I accomplished that in about 42 minutes, a little longer than my time spent prior to the surgery, but we’re getting a lot better at it. Following the 2 miles on the treadmill, I did some deep stretches and a series of … Continue reading

With the 2007 approaching, you are likely looking into possible fitness classes and more that you might want to take to get into a healthier lifestyle. So let’s take a few minutes to discuss how to get started on a fitness class. First and foremost, you’ll need a gym membership to take advantage of the fitness classes they offer. Hoop Dancing – It’s Not Just for Kids Anymore

Do you hula hoop? When my daughter got a hula hoop a year ago, she asked me to help her learn how to hula hoop and you know what? It’s not quite like riding a bike – it was hard to learn how to do it years ago and it was harder now when I thought I knew what I was doing. Hula hoops are making a resounding come back in the fitness world and it’s a trend called hoop dancing. The hula hoop is involved, but it’s not the hula you recall instead it’s a series of aerobic classes … Continue reading

Women’s Fitness: The Challenge of Mothers & Daughters

There is a long history of the challenges faced in a relationship between mothers and daughters. One challenge that you may not be familiar with, but that researchers are finding a great deal of impact in is the perception mothers and daughters have about a daughter’s weight. Studies have found that their views of a daughter’s body image are radically different. Your daughter may view herself very accurately in terms of their weight, but as mothers, we tend to see them far thinner than they may actually be. When a child is thin, we may want their weight to be … Continue reading

Women’s Fitness: Fast, Fit & Fulfilling

EDiet’s Chief Fitness pro, Raphael Calzadilla has designed a great fitness program for the busy woman. This fitness outline is a series of exercises that get you up and moving in as little as 12 to 15 minutes 3 to 5 times a week. For many of us, this sounds almost too good to be true. When you’re busy as hell and constantly on the go, moms are more likely to leave themselves out of the equation to make sure that their kids and their families are taken care of. Calzadilla’s workout may be just the thing for you. In … Continue reading
