Positive Parenting Might be your Style

Parents today have a plethora of parenting styles to choose from. Have you figured out what your parenting style is yet? If not, then perhaps Positive Parenting might be your style. Positive Parenting is a style that is intended to lessen stress and form healthier relationships between parents and their children. It is not an authoritarian parenting style. Other phrases that have been used to describe Positive Parenting include: positive discipline, gentle guidance, or loving guidance. Physical punishment, such as spanking, is absolutely not a part of Positive Parenting. It isn’t about “teaching your child a lesson”. Instead, this parenting … Continue reading

Exercise Can Improve Your Ability to Parent

Everyone knows that getting regular exercise is important. Exercise helps you lose weight, tone muscle, and stay healthy. Did you know that exercise can actually improve your ability to parent your children? This revelation could give parents a whole new reason to start exercising. Stasia Bliss wrote an article at Liberty Voice about the many ways that exercise improves parenting. She notes that when you are exercising you are nourishing yourself. Personally, I see what she is suggesting as “me time”. When you are exercising, your entire focus is on yourself and what your body is doing. It is a … Continue reading

Visualizing Your Health

There is something about getting older that makes you start to realize the serious health implications of not eating right and remaining inactive. I recently watched a show that gave you a visual of what your liver looks like when it is healthy and when it’s not, as a result of obesity. Between reaching middle age and seeing a concrete example of what a lack of exercise can do to your body, it has boosted my motivation. Where it was maybe at a level 5 or 6, it has increased to a near 8. I guess I’m starting to think … Continue reading

Building Healthy Habits To Set A Good Example

Earlier this week I had a couple of days where I did not quite feel like myself. My patience was wearing thin, I was grouchy and irritable, and I was generally not all that fun to be around. I believe that the underlying cause of my acute case of the crankies is that for the past eleven days, I have been following a rather strict nutritional program called the Whole30. The Whole30 is a nutritional program designed by the folks at Whole9 that lasts for 30 days, as the name would imply. It is designed to help people reset their … Continue reading

When Your Marriage Faces Parenting Challenges

It’s been an interesting week in our home. There are points in time that everything is going along fairly smoothly. There may be a bump or two in the road, but nothing major. Then suddenly you have a week where all three of your preteen and teen children decide to test the waters or stretch your patience or whatever it may be. Suddenly your marriage finds itself being tested as well. Navigating through the relationship of a husband and wife is challenging enough without throwing into the mix some children. Now you have additional relationships to work through. Then there … Continue reading

Ways it Get Children Involved in Nutrition

To get your child involved in nutrition and a healthy lifestyle it needs to be relevant to their lives and made to be something important. Children are egocentric and if they think a topic has no place in their lives then getting them to make life long changes will not happen. Since children are driven by wants it will be hard to break the sugar habit if they do not understand the reason why. They also need mentoring and examples to help make any lifestyle changes occur. Here are ways to get your child to take nutrition and healthy eating … Continue reading

Family Fitness With Your Toddler

If we want to prevent future health problems in our children, then we need to be encouraging fitness while they are young. So I am going to be writing a series on how you can incorporate family fitness into your home. And believe it or not, it starts with your toddlers. Once children start walking, they have the opportunity to begin a healthy lifestyle. That means allowing your child to walk, not always confining them to a stroller. If … Continue reading

Docs Advise Against Giving Children Energy Drinks

I have to admit, I’ve never quit understood the whole energy drink craze. I tried a sip of Red Bull once and it tasted like cough syrup to me. But, at lot of people swear by them. And, when people do things, their kids often follow their examples. A new report published in the journal Pediatrics is advising against giving children and teenagers energy drinks and say that sports drinks should be avoided unless the kids are actually playing sports. The report, done by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), not only warned against giving kids energy and sports drinks, … Continue reading

Should Children Lift Weights?

Last year about this time I attended my first preseason football meeting for my son who was going into 6th grade at the time. I had no idea what to expect and how much work it would be for him. The meeting covered more than just practice times and how to get your uniform. It also included information on the importance of nutrition and what the boys should be eating. They also talked about exercise and stressed that the middle school students would not be utilizing the workout room, which was reserved for high school football players. One of the … Continue reading
