Incorporating Exercise into Your Holiday Shopping

We are in the final countdown to Christmas. Have you finished your holiday shopping? While it may not be in the forefront of your mind, how about incorporating a little bit of exercise into your shopping sprees? Here are some ideas to make this happen. As you go from store to store, park as far away as you can. Not only do you get in some extra walking but you will be closer to the exits and can get out of the parking lot faster. If you are shopping at the mall, take extra laps around. Skip the escalators and … Continue reading

Be Flexible during the Busy Holiday Season

If there was ever a time in which busyness could become a good excuse for not exercising, it is certainly during the holidays. Most of us are working, taking care of families and trying to find time to make holiday preparations. I feel that stress of trying to get everything done. It is the middle of December and I don’t have all of my gift shopping done. I have yet to bake cookies and there are upcoming parties to attend, let alone planning out Christmas day in which I am hosting. But instead of using busyness during the holiday season … Continue reading

Don’t Let the Holidays Ruin Your Fitness Routine

With less than three weeks until Christmas you have two choices: A.) Give up on your regular exercise routine or B.) Stay the course and enter 2009 ahead of your New Year’s resolutions. You’re busy, you’re stressed, and it’s freezing outside… so why not go with B and take a break from your exercise routine until after New Year’s Day? Two words: Unwanted POUNDS. While it’s easy to put your fitness regime on the back burner during the holiday season, by slacking off now you’ll find it will be harder to get back on track once 2009 rolls around. Think … Continue reading

Let Kids Take on Some of the Holiday “Chores”

In single parent families, we parents do not always have to DO it all—this time of year there can be so many “chores” to do—gifts to wrap, cards to address, cookies to bake, etc. Instead of trying to be Super Parent and juggle all the balls, we can let our children in on the action. It can be another opportunity for our kids to help out in a useful way and get involved in the season—and by sharing the load we can also build a stronger, more bonded family… Over the years, my kids have not only gotten used to … Continue reading

The Most Flexible Couple In Hollywood Weds and Pitt Says Four Is NOT Enough

It’s been a busy weekend for your favorite celebs. In fact, with the myriad of weddings that took place in the last 48 hours you have to wonder if there are any single stars left in Hollywood. Previous blogs detailed the joyous nuptials of Usher, Kate Walsh, and Byron Allen, but neglected to mention the flamboyant festivities of “Dancing with the Stars’” Alec Mazo and Edyta Sliwinska. The pro dancers were married in San Francisco on Saturday, according to their rep. The wedding had an international flare with the Polish-born Sliwinska and her Russian-born husband inviting friends and family members … Continue reading

Reflections on Fitness

Before setting New Year’s resolutions, goals or whatever else you like to call the changes we often focus on with the dawning of a brand new year, I always like to first reflect on the past year. When it comes to fitness, you might want to take a look at how you have done in the past year. Did you lose weight? Did you start exercising more? Do you find that you are healthier? What accomplishments have you made? For me it has been developing a more active lifestyle. Now one of my goals for the New Year will be … Continue reading

Focus on Fitness

Although many of us base our fitness on weight and body mass index (BMI), new research from the “Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study” indicates that it’s not as important as making overall fitness changes. So if you want to reduce the risk of serious health problems, then put your focus back on fitness. We can easily get wrapped up in numbers. Personally, I have never been one to say that I want to weigh a certain amount. For me it has been about fitting in a certain size. When I focus less on the number and more on the clothing I … Continue reading

Start Now to Make Changes for the New Year

We are winding down the year 2011 and already people are starting to make plans, if even just in their minds, on how they are going to start out the New Year with changes. December is a great time to get ready. It gives you a chance to really reflect on what changes you want to make and how you want to go about them. Fitness is one of the top New Year resolutions or changes that people tend to make. But the problem is that if you decide on January 1st to start and don’t have a plan, it … Continue reading

Summer is a Good Time To Check Sight and Hearing

While you and your children are busy having fun and enjoying all of the summer activities and festivities, summer can also be a good time to take care of some of those general care things that get put off during the bustle of the school year—trips to the dentist and having the annual physical check-up are good things to do in the summer, as is having a child’s sight and hearing checked. It might not necessarily be easier to get an appointment in the summer months since doctors and dentists do take vacations, but your child’s schedule may be more … Continue reading

Alternative Airports

In my previous blog I mentioned that great airfare deals are available (even during the busy holiday travel season) provided you remain “flexible” with your travel plans. In addition to being flexible with your departure and return dates and times, it’s also helpful to consider flying in or out of alternate airports. For example, I live near two major airports in Wisconsin—–Milwaukee and Madison. So when I can’t get an affordable fare when I plug in one, I then check fares at the other. Some alternative airports are quite convenient; others are a stretch. For instance, I could fly out … Continue reading
