I Have What?

Have you ever seen a movie where someone walks down a hall with doors on both sides and they open one take a step through the door and fall? That is what hearing the diagnosis that I had cancer was like. It felt like my life ended, my Dad had cancer and he died at 47. I am only 35, I just adopted 3 kids and now I have cancer. What kind of cruel joke was this? Someone once told me that Cancer is like a one way door, once you walk through it nothing is ever the same and … Continue reading

Christina Applegate Has a Double Mastectomy

Yesterday, the headlines read something like “Christina Applegate says she is 100% clear of cancer.” I thought to myself “Wow that is a bit of a bold statement.” I mean, how can she be so sure? Today, the news broke that the “Samantha Who?” star had undergone a double mastectomy. For those that may not know, this means she had both her breasts surgically removed. The 36 year old actress had been diagnosed with breast cancer in one breast earlier this month, so why the surgery to remove both breasts, which some may see as radical? In her first interview … Continue reading

Race for the Cure – October is Around the Corner

Not really, but with just 4 months to go it’s time to start preparing for the Susan G. Komen Dallas Race for the Cure. Today I received my invitation to sign up for the 2007 Race for the Cure and so now the prepping is on. 5K Run/Walk I’ll be participating in the 5K walk this year. My goal is to do the 3 miles in about 45 minutes. This would 3 15-minute miles. The first mile is the easiest, it’s the next two miles that are tough to match and to measure. My daughter wants to do the walk … Continue reading

The Thief Who Stole My Mother: Breast Cancer Strikes

I am rapidly approaching the age my mother was when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was forty-three then, and here I am now, nearly forty. Apparently she had been watching a television show about Ann Jillian, an actress who survived breast cancer. At the end of the program, there was a brief explanation about how to give a self-examination. My mother thought, “I’ve never done that,” and so she gave herself one. There was a lump she hadn’t noticed before. My mother had never had a mammogram. Parallels My life has paralleled my mother’s in some ways. She … Continue reading

The Fitness Week in Review – October 7 – 13

Can you believe we’re already halfway through October? The days are slipping past at high speed and I feel like we’re busy all the time. Every weekend, we’ve been making a conscious decision to take a break from running on the hamster wheel and relaxing together. Part of the relaxation for me, includes catching up on my reading. The Week in Review is a small effort on my part to help you catch up on any reading or articles you may have missed this week in the fitness blog. Saturday, October 7 Since our last week in review, we discussed … Continue reading

Breast Cancer Awareness: Surgery & Fitness

For women who have undergone a lumpectomy or mastectomy and must follow it up with radiation therapy, a walking program of moderate intensity can help to improve fitness and maintain hemoglobin levels. Doctors and fitness experts have known that aerobic exercise helps women undergoing chemotherapy to preserve their red blood cells. A recent study involved twenty-one patients who were surgically treated for breast cancer and undergoing radiation therapy 5 days per week for 7 weeks. The patients were randomly assigned to aerobic exercise and to flexibility training. Thirteen were in the first group and eight in the second. The protocol … Continue reading
