Seven Year Old Cancer Patient Meets Justin Bieber

Millie Flamm is seven years old. She had concert tickets to see Justin Bieber, but was too sick to attend and had to sell the tickets. To make it up to her, Justin Bieber came to visit her and her family in private before the concert. There certainly seem to be a lot of little girls who adore Justin Bieber! Millie Flamm is one of them. She is seven years old, and was going to attend his concert at the Energy Solutions Arena, in Utah. Unfortunately, her cancer relapsed two weeks before the concert, and she was too sick to … Continue reading

Can’t Win for Winning

When it comes to playing games with my young daughter, I am that mom. You know, the one that lets her kid win. Personally, I am not married to the life-isn’t-fair-and-kids-need-to-learn-how-to-lose philosophy of parenting. To my daughter, playing is a means to an end, and that end is winning. To me, winning is subjective. Are you really winning if you crush your 3-year-old in a sprint from the front yard to the back? Are you really teaching your 40-inch preschooler the art of healthy competition if you smoke him at basketball? How damaging is it to throw a match or … Continue reading

Character Dining at Disneyland

When I was a child I was terrified of costumed characters. For some reason Halloween didn’t bother me, but I didn’t want to go near Santa Claus’ lap at the mall, to my parents’ relief (it saved them the long line wait). What frightened me the most, however, were costumed characters at amusement parks. One of my earliest memories is running in fear from the parade at Sesame Place when I was only about three. Trips to Hershey Park had me breaking out into a nervous sweat should one of the giant anthropomorphic candy bars wander near me. On second … Continue reading

Easter Candy That is Food Allergy Safe

Easter is about a week away from now. Although this holiday does have religious significance for many families, from a child’s perspective, Easter has a different focus. Most children look forward to decorating hard boiled eggs, and to eating a lot of Easter candy. Parents of children who have food allergies are going to have to be extra careful about what kinds of candy ends up in their child’s Easter basket. If you live in Australia or New Zealand, then you need to be aware of a recall of some candies from Lindt. These Easter candies contain an “undisclosed allergen”, … Continue reading

Teen Candy Beggars: Trick or Treat?

A couple of years ago I blogged the question: How old is too old to trick-or-treat? If you are not fond of handing out treats to six-foot-tall kids dressed as killer tomatoes on Halloween, then you might consider moving to the St. Louis suburb of Belleville, Illinois, or any of other town in this candy-laden country of ours where teen trick-or-treaters have been officially banned from the streets on October 31st. Belleville Mayor Mark Eckert is a straight shooter, who doesn’t mince words when it comes to explaining why his community put the kibosh on teen trick-or-treaters: “When I was … Continue reading

Festive Food Garlands

The idea of making festive Christmas garlands out of food is nothing new. In the Victorian era, when the Christmas tree first came into fashion, folks hung all sorts of things on the tree and around the home to celebrate Christmas, and food was no exception. Today, though, we have a wealth of new “materials” available to us for festive food garlands. I’ll share some of the basic traditional food garland ideas, along with some new more modern takes. Orange and Apple Garland This garland not only looks good, it smells good too! The orange and apple garland gives you … Continue reading

Halloween Candy Your Kid Gets and You Throw Out

Two words: Laffy Taffy. Who willingly allows their kids to damage their teeth on that stuff? Seriously, the only one laughing about Laffy Taffy is the dentist who invented it. That guy is chuckling all the way to the bank. Okay, I’m not exactly sure who invented Laffy Taffy (it’s manufactured by Nestle and sold under their Willy Wonka Candy Company brand), but I know it wasn’t a mom. No way! All the moms I know actively seek out each and every piece of Laffy Taffy that lands in their kid’s trick-or-treat bag and tosses the stuff straight into the … Continue reading
