Combating Emotional Eating

In my last blog I discussed what emotional eating looks like and how it plays out in someone’s life. In this blog we are going to look at ways we can combat emotional eating. First, we have to come to the realization that we cannot “will away” emotional eating. We can’t just wake up one day and say, “I WILL not eat based on my emotions.” Because guess what will immediately come in the way? Your emotions. Emotions have a funny way of intruding on us and by trying to rely solely on willpower; we are not going to be … Continue reading

Getting Ready for Back to School: Smooth Mornings

If there is one thing I dread about the start of a new school year, it is the mornings. I’m hoping other moms of teens can relate to the sometimes frustrating task of trying to wake a sleepy child. Although I may not be able to do much about that, I do know that I can help us get ready for the new school year by at least planning for a smooth morning. The key to this is preparing the night before. It used to be that most of the preparations fell on me. But in the past few years … Continue reading

Make A Change For The Better

As a single mother I try to remember every day that I am the example Hailey sees most often. I try to live a life that I want her to emulate. I want to be kind, giving, loving and have no bad habits that have a negative effect on my life or my health. Maybe in my next life I’ll be able to give up chocolate and diet soda but in this one I’m struggling! We all have habits that we wish we didn’t and things we certainly don’t want our kids to pick up. Maybe you bite your nails … Continue reading

Dealing with Your Triggers

I mentioned that sadness is my trigger for eating the wrong things and stress for failing to exercise. Hopefully you have taken the time to really consider what it is that triggers your lack of consistency. It can be the biggest detriment to living a healthy, fit lifestyle. Recognizing those triggers is just the first step. You now have to do something with that knowledge. You should come up with some helpful ways to … Continue reading

Know Your Triggers

Consistency is key to a fit lifestyle. Yet it can be very difficult to implement and stick with. I think one of the ways we can win the war on this is by recognizing the triggers in our life. What are the things that prevent us from remaining consistent? I was recently thinking about this as it can be a huge problem for me. I can be doing well for a time with my eating and then suddenly I am back to making unhealthy choices. I am in my groove with exercising at least five days a week and then … Continue reading

Is Your Son or Daughter Depressed?

It might initially be difficult to determine whether a child is just “down in the dumps,” or whether he or she is experiencing a major depressive episode. Parents can watch for symptoms that are persistent, troubling, and interfering with typical life functioning. In a major depressive episode, many of the following signs may be observed: It’s persistent. First, the sadness has been ongoing for at least two weeks or more, without lifting. It’s causing changes in the family dynamics or is contributing to family stress at home. Loss of enthusiasm. The child is no longer interested in activities that were … Continue reading
