Great Blog for Workouts and Motivation

Have you heard of Peanut Butter Fingers? No, it isn’t a new treat on the market it is a blog about fitness. I recently became aware of this blog while looking for workout routines I could effectively do in my home. Most home workouts are on DVD’s or Netflix. After a while they get boring and you lack the motivation to pop in the DVD or switch over to Netflix. I wanted to find something with teeth and something to fight the boredom. On my search I found a few tips here and there but it was not until looking … Continue reading

The weeks are flying by this summer, so let’s dive into our review of the fitness blog for the week of July 7 through July 13. Saturday, July 7 We continue our Fitness Journal-Lucky Day? entries by taking a look at a day in the park (well an hour really) designed to exercise and enjoy the weather. In C is for Calorie we examine what a calorie is and why we should care about it. Sunday, July 8 In D is for Dumbbell we look at free weights, the history behind their creation and how they got such an insulting … Continue reading

D is for Dumbbell

Dumbbells – the standard name for free weights. There are a lot of jokes that used to be made about dumbbells, but we’re going to avoid those today. Typically, a dumbbell is a weight that features a short bar with a weighted disk at either end. Dumbbells can be adjusted by adding or removing weighted disks to increase or decrease the resistance that particular dumbbell offers. Dumbbells typically come in pairs because in an ideal world, you only need one hand to hold each dumbbell. The word itself comes to us via Tudor England. The bell clapper was a device … Continue reading

Staying Active Despite Your Desk Job

If there is one detriment to maintaining an active lifestyle it is a desk job. Some people, me included, spend hours sitting in a chair staring at a computer screen. Apparently there are some offices who have found a way to work around this; workstations that fit over treadmills. What a great idea. The original concept of this came from a man who suffered a leg injury in 2008. Up until then he had been active. So he came up with what is called the “TrekDesk.” He was able to continue working, walk off 26 pounds, get better sleep and … Continue reading

The Benefits of Weight Training

Today we are going to be looking into the benefits of weight training. Unless you are interested in toning your muscles, you might skip this type of fitness. But weight training isn’t just for becoming more muscular. One of the benefits not everyone is aware of is that it can help fight off muscle loss. As we age, we lose lean muscle mass and guess what replaces it? Fat! It just comes with aging and there isn’t much you can do about it, unless you replace the fat with muscle mass…which can only happen if you implement weight training. The … Continue reading

Burning Calories Inside this Winter

As the weather gets colder many begin to shut down and hibernate for the winter. The hibernation you put yourself in can lead to a very overweight spring. It is important to stay active all year long regardless of the weather otherwise your consumed calories will sneak up on you. I have a tendency to stay indoors and home more during the winter months. Staying home has never been good for the size of my hips. To combat that I had to find ways to stay active indoors during those cold gray months. Activities to Keep You Moving During the … Continue reading

How to Save Money on Your Workouts

Getting in shape does not require a major investment, however, having some items and resources can make it a whole lot easier. I’ve been on a get fit and stay fit mission for a while now, and here are some of the ways that I have been able to save without sacrificing. Just getting through a tough workout is enough sacrifice, don’t you think? Sports Clothing When I first started running, I made use of whatever I had on hand. For me, this meant diving into my standard collection of t-shirts and using some cotton shorts I bought for sleep … Continue reading

The Best and Worst of 2010

While we look ahead to 2011, we should also take the time to look back on 2010 and consider some of the best and worst of the past year. Actually, anything good almost always has its downside and that is what I will be tackling in this blog. While I am a huge fan of Wii Fit Plus, video games that incorporate exercise can become a replacement for “real” exercise. My son got the Kinect for his Xbox this Christmas and I have seen him become active again, since he is stuck inside for winter. So there are real benefits … Continue reading
