Get Ready to Dance!

Or at least watch others do so on TV. Tonight is the night! The sixth season of “Dancing with the Stars” gets under way in just a few hours and I am thrilled, namely because it is the only show (besides the news) that I watch live. (I have a backlog of recorded shows that I have yet to find the time to watch.) I’ve written dozens of “Dancing with the Stars” related blogs and by now most of you know that my money is on Olympic Gold Medal Figure Skater Kristi Yamaguchi. But Yamaguichi is not the only athlete … Continue reading

Teach Your Dog How to Dance

If your dog likes to jump up, you may find it easy to teach your dog how to dance! I’m currently working on this trick with my Lally — she is a boxer mix who lives up to the “boxer” part of her heritage. When someone comes to the door, she likes to jump up and “box” them in greeting. I’d love it if she only did that sort of thing on command! The advantage of dancing on command is that it becomes a replacement behavior for jumping up. Many dogs who learn to dance don’t end up putting as … Continue reading

Sometimes Guidance Must be Subtle

Often it seems very clear to us as parents that we must step in and be direct and “take charge” when it comes to guiding and parenting our children. Especially when they are younger and we need to keep them safe and make sure lessons are very clear and concise. As our children get older, however, sometimes we need to take a much lighter hand. Our guidance and parenting often has to be much more subtle… I have found that learning how to guide my children from more of an advisory or facilitator’s role has been one of the hardest … Continue reading

In Step or Tangled in the Dance of Life?

Are you becoming tangled in the dance of life? Or are you following the instructor? Recently my husband and I went for the first of a series of dancing lessons. We found, in what the instructor called the Tracey Lee waltz, it was not a case of two left feet but four, as we bumbled around tying to follow the moves the instructor and his partner made look effortless. For us, it became a tangle of legs as one of us always seemed to manage to go the wrong way. It can be like that in life. We can think … Continue reading

So You Think You Can Dance – I’m Hooked

It took the show’s third season to do it, but I’m officially hooked on So You Think You Can Dance. I sat glued to the screen on Wednesday evening, watching the dancers and their dances and feeling really impressed. For those of you who haven’t watched the show before, the premise is simple, but elegant. Dancers from around the country compete to be in the top 20 dancers. If they make it to the top 20, there are 10 girls and 10 guys. The dancers are partnered up and then they draw a dance style from a hat. They then … Continue reading

In the movie Terms of Endearment, Aurora Greenway said, ““Work like you don’t need the money, love like your heart has never been broken, and dance like no one is watching.” It’s a beautiful sentiment. Your First Dance & YouTube

Have you ever visited YouTube? It’s all the rage now from music videos for your favorite soap opera characters to personal video clips shared with the whole family and much, more. YouTube is also becoming the hot venue for couples looking to show off and get noticed with their first dance. Among some of the dances I’ve seen couples do on YouTube includes a bride, groom and their wedding party delivering a great rendition of Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Can You Imagine Creating a Spectacle? It’s hard for me to imagine dancing our first dance to something that’s designed to make … Continue reading

Popular Dance Still Kicking

Michael Flatley and his Riverdance phenomenon catapulted traditional Irish step dancing into the annals of pop culture. But, Flatley’s got nothing on my 2-year-old. My daughter loves to dance. Ever since she saw Elmo make like Michael Flatley on TV, there’s been no stopping her pint-sized body from jiggling uncontrollably. Couple that with her obsession with ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” (she spins around the house insisting that she is doing the “cha cha cha” and the “wumba”) and I was compelled to reach for the phone to call an agent (just kidding–I called our local dance studio). I wanted … Continue reading

The Fitness Blog Week in Review Jan 13-19

What a week – a very long week here. I’m writing these weeks in review ahead of time to give myself some down time this weekend so – if you haven’t had some down time recently and find yourself in the need of it – create the time. We all need that down time here and there and I said goodbye to two old friends this week and I am not afraid to admit – that emotionally, I’m tired. So without further ado – here is a quick cool down of our week in fitness. Saturday, January 13 Great Myths: … Continue reading
