Lose Fat, Not Money at Hilton

Staying fit on the road can be challenging, especially if you are not a runner and don’t have the luxury of simply slipping on comfy shoes and heading outside to get in a decent workout. For many people, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is priceless and they are willing to spend a pretty penny in order to stick to their current exercise routine. However, that can be hard when you are traveling for business or pleasure. Tracking down a hotel with a gym can be a pain, not to mention costly. Fortunately, Hilton Hotels and Resorts is making it easier to … Continue reading

Why My Veterinarian Is the Best

(but my cat doesn’t think so) Last Thursday I took Cole to the vet for his annual visit. Although I didn’t get many more answers there than I did when Chrestomanci had his trip, I left much more satisfied. I’m just continually reminded why I love my vet. I brought up my questions about Cole’s behavioral antics and, unfortunately (though I suspected as much) the vet didn’t really have any advice for me. She said many cats enjoy being in high places, and that there’s not a lot to do to deter them. I asked whether he would be happier … Continue reading

Health Insurer Pays Adults to Lose Weight

At the beginning of every new year, there are thousands of people who make a New Year’s Resolution to lose weight. A health insurance company in Colorado is paying adults who live in that state to lose weight. Losing weight isn’t easy, but, a financial incentive might influence people to really try losing that extra weight this year. It is called the “Weigh and Win” program. It is being offered to any adult who lives in Colorado, and is being run by Kaiser Permanente, an insurance company that sells health insurance. This insurer is spending a total of $500,000 to … Continue reading

Prepare a Budget Knowing how much you have to spend will keep you on track and make sure that you don’t get caught up in the bargain frenzy and overspend. Have you heard of the envelope system? Take out the same number of envelopes as you have people to buy gifts for. Place the amount of money you … Continue reading

Employers to Charge Higher Premiums to Smokers

Companies that offer employer sponsored health insurance are always looking for ways to lower the amount of money that they have to spend on it. There is a new trend for employers to charge higher premiums to workers who smoke, or who are obese. This decision is controversial. In the past few years, employers have been doing a variety of things to attempt to encourage their workers to become healthier. This isn’t because the corporation has developed a mother-like interest in their employees, or has a true interest in making the lives of their workers better. The real motivation has … Continue reading

Utah Hospitals Change Eligibility For Cheaper Insurance

A chain of hospitals in Utah that are owned by HCA MountainStar is going to be doing something unique with the employer sponsored health insurance that the group offers to its employees. Starting next year, there will be separate health insurance options available to workers, depending on whether or not they submitted to a health screening. Six hospitals in Utah that are owned by HCA MountainStar are changing their eligibility for some employer sponsored health insurance plans, starting in 2012. Employees will be asked to submit to annual screenings. I’m not sure if this new idea qualifies as a form … Continue reading

Those Great Consignment Shops

Consignment shops are great to shop at for people who do not have a lot of money to spend on clothes and various other items. They are also wonderful for people who tire easily of the “same old thing” or need clothing just for a short period of time, such as during pregnancy or the in between periods of weight loss. Women who are pregnant generally only need their maternity clothing for about 7 months or so. In the early months of pregnancy their regular wardrobe should be fine. After the baby is born they can usually get back in … Continue reading

Money Resolultions

I can’t believe that 2010 is almost over. Tomorrow starts a new year and new opportunities to start fresh. If you planned ahead, you do not have any Christmas debt to look forward to throughout the year. Typically the New Year brings New Year’s resolutions. I used to make resolutions, but then they became silly traditions with no impetus to follow through. How many times have you resolved to lose weight, work out, be neater, be nicer, etc.? How long did your resolutions last? Was your resolve strong? My resolve never was. We all know that diets don’t work. Diets … Continue reading

The Crash Diet

Have you ever tried a crash diet? Sure, they don’t generally work for your body. You may lose a lot of weight quickly, but as soon as you go back to your normal eating and workout routines (or lack thereof), the weight comes right back. It’s a bit disheartening, to say the least. Money crash diets can be similar. You decide to save a lot of money, and for a while you are very, very frugal. Then you slip. Then you slip again. Finally, you go back to your old ways, bailing out of the crash diet in a big … Continue reading
