Tweaking Your Plans

I try really hard to never use the excuse, “I don’t have time” when it comes to exercising. Because most often that is exactly what it is…an excuse. But what happens when it is reality? Let’s face it, we all deal with days and sometimes weeks where every single second of the day seems to be squeezed out of us. It can be detrimental to your fitness routine. I had been doing really well, exercising for 30 minutes every morning and sometimes even getting in a mile walk in the evening. But then life happened and suddenly it became nearly … Continue reading

Ways to Stay Motivated

In my last fitness blog, “What Impacts Your Motivation to Exercise?” I talked about how the weather impacts my drive to exercise or not to. Since its spring most of us can expect there to be up and down days, as far as temperatures and rain. But as we are looking toward the constant days of warmth and good weather, we should be thinking more about what we can do to motivate ourselves. The way you go into a fitness plan can make all the difference as far as your drive and determination. For instance, set realistic goals and expectations. … Continue reading

Getting the Idea of Exercising from Your Mind to Your Heart

So you have probably polished off the last of the pumpkin pie and have hopefully awoken from your turkey coma. The mashed potatoes and gravy may still feel like they are sitting around your middle but you are determined to get a head start on a fitness routine. Why wait until the New Year? Why not get started now? There is nothing wrong with looking at certain opportunities as the perfect time to start a fitness routine. The fresh start of a new year, the day after your big Thanksgiving feast, or the day you celebrate a birthday…no matter what … Continue reading

Falling Off the Wagon

After so many months of doing good, I have fallen off the wagon. The past couple of weeks I have been struggling to get in exercise. Actually, I shouldn’t really say I have been struggling…it has been easy to not exercise. Circumstances in life have gotten me feeling down, and unfortunately I have been handling it (or should I say not handling it) by eating junk food and skipping exercise. I am stuffing my emotions with food, something I thought I had overcome. It’s frustrating that I could so easily allow troubles in life to do this. Months and months … Continue reading

A Fit Lifestyle Takes Time

I am now two months into my new fit lifestyle, which has included making changes to my diet and implementing a regular exercise routine. While I have lost weight (and inches) it has been slow going. This is the point where it can become discouraging. The other day there was a radio ad about the weight loss product Sensa, a product that I certainly would never try. After all, it supposedly helps you lose weight but you don’t have to change your eating habits or even exercise. That scares me. But I have to admit it tickled my ears to … Continue reading

Fitness Founder Jack LaLanne Dies at Age 96

The founder of our modern fitness movement, Jack LaLanne died this past week at the age of 96. You have to admit, the guy looked good for 96 years old! For more than 70 years, LaLanne taught about the benefits of strength training and eating a healthy diet. What he started decades ago has turned into a multi-million dollar industry. The sad part about it is that despite his beneficial teachings, Americans continue to struggle with weight issues. It was in 1936 that the nation’s first health club opened. At the time it served as a place to not only … Continue reading

Surviving the Holidays

The end of November and into the New Year is when many people struggle with fitness. This is a time of year where weight is gained due to the holiday celebrations. Then there are people who have no problem letting loose because they figure once the New Year comes, they can start again. You can survive the holiday season and still maintain a fitness routine. It won’t be easy but with some discipline and the right perspective you … Continue reading

Should You Exercise When Sick?

I think more than anything I was looking for a good excuse this morning to not exercise. I did a Google search on exercising while you are sick. I shouldn’t have been surprised but there were several articles about this. I have been feeling under the weather the past few days. My body is run down, my throat hurts and I am sure that bronchitis is making its way into my body. It’s hard enough to get up and take care of the family, home and still do my job. But exercise? I don’t even want to think about it. … Continue reading

Fitness Bootcamp: A Hot New Trend

Pilates has been one of the more popular fitness trends for a while now. However it appears that according to recent surveys and reports, the newest fitness trend that will make some big waves is Bootcamp. Fitness bootcamp is military-style fitness. What I think is interesting about this is that it’s probably just what many of us need, something in your face. If sticking to a fitness routine is difficult, this may be the answer. I have limited experience with anything military. My father was in the Air Force but I don’t know much about his time there. My 16-year-old … Continue reading

Menopause Will Not Win This Battle

I have recently learned that menopause and losing weight don’t exactly mix. While I am striving to change my lifestyle a little here and a little there, I am also battling another war waging within my body…menopause. Unfortunately, with menopause oftentimes comes weight gain. Some statistics say that about 90% of menopausal women can expect to gain weight between the ages of 35 and 55. And many experts believe that women are not to blame for this, that it is related to shifting hormones more than overeating. I guess that gives me some comfort but at the same time, does … Continue reading
