Don’t Forget to Take Care of Yourself

As a mother it is natural to put our children’s needs above our own. While there is nothing wrong with this, it is important to remember to take care of your needs as well. Your kids need a healthy mommy to take care of them, which means like it or not, you can’t push your needs aside anymore. You have to take care of yourself, so you are still around to take care of them in the future. As a woman yearly exams are crucial. It doesn’t matter how old you are, how healthy you think you may be, there’s … Continue reading

Video Killed the Dieting Star

In today’s society it is becoming easier to live a sedentary lifestyle and feel as if you not missing out. We have texting, Facebook, video games, YouTube, TV, DVRs, Chat Rooms, and so many things competing for our glazed eyes as we sit our bottoms in an unforgiving chair. Typing or gaming fingers seem to be the only body part doing aerobic activity. Teens who do not know life before microwaves and Xbox are victims of living a life in a seated position. Today’s young people are more likely to venture into the world wide web then breath in fresh … Continue reading

“My Son Has Juvenile Diabetes and Autism.” A Mother’s Interview

The following interview is with Ammey, a mother whose children have multiple medical and cognitive conditions. Of particular interest to me is her situation with her oldest son, Khy, who has both juvenile diabetes and autism. Ammey responded to my blog, Do You Have BOTH Juvenile Diabetes and Autism in Your Family? Here is her story. 1. Tell us a little about your family. My name is Ammey, and I’ve been married for thirteen years to my husband Mikel. We have three children: Our son Khy is 14, Kaine is 11, and Lilli is four. Khy has autism, asthma, type … Continue reading

How to Recover From Surgery

Are you someone who can’t stand to sit still for days on end? Then this is the blog for you. I am speaking from experience because this is what I am going through right now. I’ve had surgeries in the past, but I always seemed to bounce back from those with relative speed – apparently because what I experienced this time was a major surgery, my bouncing back is a lot slower than I expected. Great Plans of Mice and Men It’s said that there are great plans to be made – and that we base all of those plans … Continue reading

The Perfect Yoga Mat

I’m one of those people who get an idea about something that they need and then spend way too much time searching for exactly what I want. This habit is much better suited for house hunting or buying a car than it is for small purchases. Maybe I justify this because I spend almost as much time with my yoga mat as I do in my car. Honestly, my mat has a lot of life left in it. After a nice cleaning, it is almost as good as new. So what, that it is a subdued, olive green and it … Continue reading

Care of African American Children in Transracial Adoptions: Winter Skincare

Long before I ever began blogging, I have wanted to talk about this subject. I remember the first time I noticed a white mother pushing a little black baby in a shopping cart, I wanted to run over to her and give her words of encouragement, and some hair care tips to boot. (Some of my fellow employees pointed and stared, and the baby’s hair was a mess). I am going to save those two subjects for later and start with something a bit closer to my heart… skincare. Adoption blogger Ed Paul, tells me that skincare is an issue … Continue reading

Our “WALK TO CURE DIABETES” Scrapbook

Today our family walked to cure diabetes! We got up bright and early and drove for an hour to our destination. (I had to yank and coax and threaten a few kids to get out of bed.) But once we got there, we were so glad we made the effort. Now that I have two sons with juvenile diabetes, I knew our family needed to take a stronger stand in joining the cause to cure it. We made a donation, and others offered their support. This is a disease which takes a terrible toll on a child’s health and well-being. … Continue reading

Fitness Goals – The Long & The Short of It

We talked about stimulating your routines yesterday so we can get out of the mid-summer fitness slump. Today, we’re going to discuss our fitness goals. We do monthly check ups here and we’ve even set up a month long exercise regimen with our Spring Forward to Action Challenge. In August, I’d like to host a back to school challenge and invite readers to post their goals, stories and successes – but let’s do this one-month at a time. Take some time today to evaluate your personal fitness goals. We begin by throwing out the expectations of others. If you’ve been … Continue reading

Just Who is Candace E. Salima?

So, I’m thinking to myself. Maybe I should interview myself – hey, I’m writing these BLOGS, I’m an author and maybe you should know a little more about me. My bio paints a pretty clear picture of my background, on a surface level. But I’m going to ask myself the same questions I’m asking others. So here we go: 1. What prompted you to become a writer? My mother taught us how to read before we hit kindergarten. I can’t remember a time when books weren’t an integral part of my life. As a child my reading interests were in … Continue reading
