Spirituality and Fitness

Faith and fitness has been on my radar screen the past few days and now it has become a news story in the army. Recently a concern amongst atheists was raised with regard to a mandatory spiritual fitness test given to recruits. The point of the spiritual fitness test is to determine how well soldiers can handle not only the physical challenges before them but the psychological challenges as well. It was created to help curb a common result of combat, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Now I have always believed that the body and mind go together when it comes … Continue reading

Using Faith in Fitness

I am very excited about next Monday as I will be posting a blog on a review I am doing for a book called “Made to Crave” written by Lysa TerKeurst, who is President of Proverbs 31 Ministries. Until then I wanted to give this little teaser. Lysa TerKeurst was recently a guest blogger on CNN’s Belief blogs called, “My Take: When the Fat Girl Got Mad at God.” I can’t recommend the blog enough. Lysa gets real about her struggle with food and how her faith has helped her to overcome unhealthy eating habits. The blog stirred some controversy. … Continue reading

Fitness Musings: The Hero of The Story

We’ve talked about heroes here before and we’ve talked about heroes as role models, but I heard an interesting turn of phrase – most of us are the heroes of our own stories. What does that mean? It means that for most of us – we exist as individuals and we are the main character in our own personal stories. In as much, we are the heroes of those stories. Our past is our prologue and our present is the heart of the story. So what does this have to do with fitness? Fitness Begins Inside You can do all … Continue reading

Fitness Musings: Why Do You Get Out of Bed in the Morning?

I got into an argument yesterday. I know I shouldn’t let myself get into these arguments, but occasionally someone says something to me that just makes my nerves twitch. I was talking to a friend who listed a whole host of reasons as to why she couldn’t exercise regularly. She was shoveling blame on to everything from daylight savings time to the fact that she can’t function without coffee in the morning. Life is Hard Life is hard. I know that. I have a difficult time with meeting all of my obligations on a day-to-day basis. We’ve had medical crisis, … Continue reading

The Marriage Blog Week in Review for Jan 20-26

Good morning, if you noticed a curious lack of the marriage blog week in review, I have to plead guilty. I wrote most of it, but yesterday, my daughter had a birthday party and we went out together to attend. It was a roller skating party and for those of you who follow my fitness blog posts, you know that my daughter and I have been roller-skating a great deal frequently, well we enjoyed ourselves roller-skating, but I was whipped after an hour and half on the skates and my legs felt like spaghetti. I’ll talk more about that in … Continue reading

Friday Fitness: The Psychological Benefits of Exercise

There are many benefits we’ve discussed that exercise provides for you and for your family. Remember, when you are healthier, happier and more likely to live healthier and longer – your family benefits as well. One of the reasons I enjoy exercising regularly is because I know it’s a great gift that I can give to my daughter – because it means I’ll be healthier and less stressed – and how can a child not benefit from that? But beyond the obvious physical benefits of exercise, there are some impressive psychological benefits as well. So what are the psychological benefits … Continue reading

Fitness: The Holiday Perspective

The holidays are a joyful time and a time when we think of family and friends and we gather together and we celebrate. But the holidays are also a time when we remember those who are not with us and those who have left us before. It doesn’t matter if the people we mourn past from us a decade ago or a week ago, that grief is revisited as we bring our families together. Just a few days ago would have marked my grandmother’s 86th birthday, but she left us 8 years ago and that grief, though tempered by time … Continue reading

The Marriage Blog Week in Review – November 4 –10

It’s been a busy and exciting week here in the Marriage blog. There was a national election on Tuesday that saw 7 states accept constitutional amendments to ban gay marriage, while one state – Arizona said no to that ban. If you don’t read my fitness blog, you may not have known that I also quit smoking this week and today marks Day 4 heading into Day 5 and I’ll be writing about how great my spouse has been in supporting this effort next week. In the meanwhile, if you missed any of our key stories this week, here is … Continue reading

Spiritual Fitness

As a salute to some of my fellow bloggers who are doing the Muslim , Jewish Families , LDS & Mormon Families and Christian Families blogs, I wanted to talk about spiritual fitness. If you have not read any of these blogs, I would encourage you to visit them. The wonderful writers there are sharing great information and beautiful tales of their faith, their celebrations and their traditions. Spiritual fitness means different things to different people. For the majority, it means developing a set of beliefs, principals or values that will guide and give meaning as well as purpose to … Continue reading
