Reflections on Fitness

Before setting New Year’s resolutions, goals or whatever else you like to call the changes we often focus on with the dawning of a brand new year, I always like to first reflect on the past year. When it comes to fitness, you might want to take a look at how you have done in the past year. Did you lose weight? Did you start exercising more? Do you find that you are healthier? What accomplishments have you made? For me it has been developing a more active lifestyle. Now one of my goals for the New Year will be … Continue reading

When a Chronic Condition Interrupts Your Fitness Routine

It is so frustrating to have a good fitness routine going, only to see it crumble because of sickness. I have been battling a severe flair-up of costochondritis for about two weeks now. The inflammation and pain have prevented me from doing any form of exercise, let alone light housework, without exacerbating the problem. I have also had to come to the realization that I likely suffer from a chronic form of it, so this won’t be the last time my life is interrupted. I guess it helps me to somewhat understand what others go through who have conditions like … Continue reading

I love the variety of exercises, the way you can tailor your own fitness routine and how much fun it is. I have never so enjoyed working out as much as I do … Continue reading

Health Benefits for Weight Loss and Fitness

I have recently gotten a new health plan. This prompted further investigation on my part as to any entitlement in additional health discounts on my new plan. I was happy to find that there were several discounts available for my use just by showing the company my new health plan identification card. Probably the best benefit that I found was for Bally’s. However, there were benefits for Jenny Craig, Jazzercise, Weight Watcher’s and more. I do not know if I will make any use of them, but it is nice to know that they are there just in case I … Continue reading

More Fitness Myth Busters

Apparently, big muscles aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. According to a new study, not only does exercise not boost metabolism as much as widely believed, but even more shocking, is the fact that increased muscle mass doesn’t speed up weight loss either. Researchers maintain that while a pound of muscle burns more calories than a pound of fat — about seven to 10 calories a day versus two calories — most people don’t put on enough muscle to make much of a difference. “Building muscle is very difficult for most individuals because it requires heavy weight workouts and … Continue reading

Biggest Fitness Mistakes

If you are a female looking to lose weight as expeditiously as possible, a new study says you need to kick up your fitness routine. Researchers say that one of the biggest mistakes women make at the gym, is thinking their available workout time is best spent completing cardio exercises — often at the same pace the entire time. However, studies show rather than doing 45 minutes of cardio work at a steady (and relatively easy) pace, women can burn more fat and calories if they complete intense cardio work, and also incorporate some strength exercises. Bottom line: Women, who … Continue reading

Here are some ways you can shed pounds without going broke: Make a commitment to losing weight and stick with it—-no matter how tired you might be. Fitness Facts: Fructose and Fasting

The next time you are at the supermarket consider leaving the apple and orange juice on the shelf. New research says that fructose found in fruit juices and other processed foods makes you fat. New studies show that fructose dramatically enhances ipogenesis, the process by which the body converts sugar into fat. One particular study found that people who consumed a breakfast drink, which contained high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), produced double the body fat in the four-hour period that followed than those who consumed a glucose-only beverage. For those of you who have considered fasting to shed unwanted pounds (perhaps … Continue reading

Fitness Myths: Setting the Record Straight

Now that we know sit ups won’t melt away body fat and building muscle doesn’t necessarily translate into a speedier metabolism, let’s debunk a few more popular fitness myths: Myth: Lifting Weights Makes You Look Bulky If you are a woman, who is concerned that lifting weights is going to make you look like Popeye, you can stop worrying. According to experts, women can’t develop muscles like men. However, if you are still not convinced, then workout with lighter weights, or complete exercises that use your own bodyweight for resistance. Bottom line: The average woman doesn’t produce enough testosterone to … Continue reading

Debunking Fitness Myths

I always wonder about those sweaty guys I see in the gym who do dozens of crunches, then stroll over to the vending machine to down a bottle of Mountain Dew. Unless that’s the only high calorie beverage they consume all day, I would think they would be better off drinking a bottle of water. That is if they ever want to see the six-pack abs they are trying to create via the crunches. Crunches won’t get rid of body fat. That’s one of the biggest fitness myths out there. The only way you are going to be able to … Continue reading
