Family Fitness: Stress and How it Affects the Family

How many arguments do parents have when one or the other arrives late from work? How many times have you heard a partner say, ‘I thought this was the one place I could catch a break!’ The myth of family is that the home should be a bastion of peace and tranquility. The stresses of life should not walk in the front door and sit down to share the supper table with the wife, kids, parents and in-laws. Family Stress Family stress is very much like normal stress in that the stress itself is inevitable. Families, after all, are comprised … Continue reading

Beware Frauds in Fitness

The hardest part about the fitness industry today is that there are so many get slim quick schemes out there. They apply the same logic and marketing to these get thin fast products as they do to the get rich quick scheme. The simple truth is if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. I bring this up, honestly, because of a Doctor Who episode that aired here a few weeks ago. The episode involved a company called Adipose Industries. They developed a little blue pill that people who were overweight could take and it would make … Continue reading

The Great Large Dog Apartment Search

Moose and Lally and I are on the brink of a great adventure. We’re planning a move from the east coast (New Jersey to be exact) to the west coast (somewhere in the Portland metro area). We’d like it to happen some time this spring. And that’s where things got difficult. As if searching long-distance for a place to live wasn’t hard enough, I have the pups to consider. And there’s no way I’m leaving them behind! Lally is a boxer/shar-pei mix, weighing in at around 55 pounds. Moose is a German shepherd mix, way overweight at 105 pounds. We … Continue reading

10 Best Fitness Choices for 2006

It’s the time of year for making those top ten lists and as I wind up my workweek and look forward to this weekend, I thought what a better way to summarize the year and the work we’ve done here at Families.com and get in a little fun at the same time. Towards that effort, I have thought about some of the fitness choices we’ve discussed here in the Fitness Blog and I’ve thought about the New Year’s Resolutions we are all considering for next year and those that we planned for this year. In that light, here are my … Continue reading

Moms & Dads: Lighten the Load

Whether you have one child or five children (hi Valorie!) you know that stress is an unavoidable part of your life. Whether you work out of the home, inside the home or focus on being a stay at home mom or dad who runs the household – or you are some combination of all of these (and isn’t that exactly what the working parent is?) – then you know that stress can become so burdensome that you feel like you are drowning in it. We’ve talked about making to do lists and writing them down in a priority order and … Continue reading

The Never Ending List

I’m a list maker. I make lists of everything, sometimes when I’m going especially crazy, I make lists of my lists. I know how crazy that sounds but if I write something on a list I can keep it from taking up space in my head because I know the list is keeping track of it for me. The feeling of accomplishment I get when I get to cross things off my list, well, it makes me feel like a I have a little bit of control over my sometimes chaotic life. Maybe that’s why I dislike housework. Sure there … Continue reading

The Music for the Work

I’m going to sort of reveal my age here, but I really don’t understand how most of the young people on college campuses can stand having terrible sounding ear buds in their ears all day pumping low quality digitized music into their ears. They listen while walking, talking, studying, reading, eating, ordering, exercising, partying, playing and some even sleeping. The small portion when they’re in class (if they actually take them out) they’re giving their ears a much-needed break. Simply put, I can’t understand how you can exist in the world with constant noise going on in your head. How … Continue reading

The Many Marathons of runDisney

I just came in from my morning run with my dog, so it seems appropriate that now I’d sit down to write about the Disney Parks’ many marathons. I run for the sake of my health and my dog’s health, however, not so much for fun, so don’t expect to hear of me signing up for any of these any time soon. For 2012 runDisney has added another marathon to its schedule. The Los Angeles Examiner reports that on January 29, 2012 Disneyland will host the Tinker Bell Half Marathon. This is another event exclusively for women, joining the already-established … Continue reading

Women’s Athletica: A Great New Online Resource for Women

Always on the lookout for helpful fitness resources, I just recently read about something new online. It is Women’s Athletica and is something definitely worth checking out. Women’s Athletica is a health, fitness and lifestyle blog and ezine. It covers virtually every topic related to women. Here is an idea of some of the topics available: fitness, nutrition, weight loss, yoga, running, health, emotional health, anti-aging and sports. It is then broken down into more specific categories that again, are all related to women’s issues such as sex and sexuality, fashion and injuries. It has so much information that I … Continue reading
