Should Government Be Involved In Fitness?

Recently Michelle Obama made some comments that ruffled quite a few feathers. In her efforts to launch a campaign against childhood obesity she made some statements about her own children that rose more than a few eyebrows. Some of the criticism stemmed from the mere fact that she used her own children as an example. Some critics believe that Mrs. Obama should have kept her children out of the discussion. Other criticism that arose was based on her doctor’s assessment that her daughter was overweight and needed to go on a diet. Critics believe there is a fine line between … Continue reading

The Fitness Blog Week in Review: June 30 – July 6

One week into July and in some parts of the country, the temperatures are scorchers and down here in Texas, we’re breaking rainfall records and wondering what happened to our sun. It’s been a busy week and let’s explore what we talked about in the Fitness blog this week: Saturday, June 30 Our End of June Fitness Goal Check went down our checklist of fitness goals. Five For Fighting Fitness

As busy as we can be, it’s important to keep track of how you can squeeze more fitness and healthy choices into your daily habits – because remember, it’s all the little things that add up and mean something in the long run. So rather than bore you with a long introduction, let’s just dive into our five tips for today: Brown bag your lunch – seriously, brown bag it. When you eat out for lunch every day, you are more likely to overeat or eat foods that are rich in fats or carbohydrates. If you brown bag it, you … Continue reading

Fat Cells May Prevent Cancer Fighting Mechanism

We have known for a long time now that obesity increases our cancer risk. New studies have found though that fatty tissue actually decreases the body’s ability to fight cancer. This study was performed in mice, and by decreasing their percentage body fat (with surgery or by running three to five km a day on training wheels) made them more able to fight skin cancer. Researchers at Rutgers University performing this study on mice suggest that fat cells could potentially be secreting compounds that counteract the body’s main anti-tumour defense systems. This system is called apoptosis and is pretty much … Continue reading

5 Ways to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain

Although Thanksgiving is behind us, it doesn’t mean the temptation to overeat is gone. This is especially true if you are a baker or live with someone who is, or work at a place where treats are always being brought in. From Thanksgiving until after the New Year, it is easy to put on weight (some say it’s an average of 10 pounds). Because more than likely, the enthusiasm to exercise has also worn off. So between all the food and the lack of motivation or time to exercise (now we are busy shopping, attending parties, baking, writing Christmas cards, … Continue reading

Who Was Susan G. Komen?

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. And one name I hear associated with the fight against breast cancer over and over is Susan G. Komen. Susan G. Komen was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of thirty-three. Her three year battle with the disease included nine operations and three courses of chemotherapy. She passed away in 1980. Her sister, Nancy Brinker, founded the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in 1982. Brinker felt that her sister might have had a better battle against the disease if more people understood cancer and how it is treated. Komen had also asked … Continue reading

Three Fun Ways to Prepare Your Marriage to Survive an Economic Depression

Last night while I was watching Mad Money, Jim Cramer said something which helped to slightly ease my worries about another Great Depression. He said we’re likely not heading into one. However, the key word was “likely.” Even he’s not 100 percent sure where we’re headed yet. That’s why my mind was only slightly eased. But as Cramer offered money and investing advice, I got to thinking about a couple of things. One was the movie Life is Beautiful. I loved how the main character found a way to make a game out of living in a concentration camp. The … Continue reading

Not All Breast Cancer Patients Need Chemotherapy

Two recent studies took a look at whether or not chemotherapy is the best treatment for breast cancer — with interesting results. The studies were reported at the 31st Annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, an annual gathering of scientists from around the world. One study found that women were less likely to have a relapse or die if treated with a less harsh drug than the standard chemotherapy drug, Adriamycin. One study (from Loyola University in Chicago, IL) used a gene test to help predict whether or not a woman actually needs chemotherapy to treat breast cancer — or … Continue reading

Is Your Diet Putting You At Risk For Breast Cancer?

Three years ago this month my mother was told she was cancer free. The good news came after major surgery, months of treatment and a complete overhaul of her diet. My mom’s breast cancer diagnosis acted as a severe wake up call to our entire family. As you likely know by now October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. What you may not know is that breast cancer affects over 200,000 women in the U.S. each year and about 40,000 women die annually from the insidious disease. As I mentioned earlier my mother is still with us, but as a … Continue reading

C is for Calorie

What is a calorie? Do you know what a calorie is? It’s a unit of energy. It’s the energy that exists in food and that our bodies in turn utilize. Ultimately, a calorie is determined to be the amount of heat that is required to heat 1 kilogram of water 1 degree Celsius. So if you have 240 calories in something, that’s enough energy to heat 1 kilogram of water to 240 degrees Celsius and that’s pretty hot, right? Calories Are Important Whether you care that there are 710 calories in a double cheeseburger or not, calories are a part … Continue reading
