Taking It One Week at a Time

You are probably familiar with the phrase “take it one day at a time.” There are many times in my life when I follow this mantra. However, it doesn’t necessarily work for fitness so I have adopted “take it one week at a time.” When I first decided a couple of years ago to really get serious about fitness, I knew from the start that I was going to battle with it. I get bored easily and I lose motivation. So I had to figure out a way to combat both. The problem for some is that they believe in … Continue reading

Continuing Post Partum Exercise

Now that I am almost five months post partum (it is crazy how quickly time passes), I am realizing that my post partum journey is hardly over. As this stage of my life progresses and evolves, so must my post partum workout routine. It was at this point after my son’s birth that I finally picked up and stuck with a hard core exercise regiment. Gaging my progress, successful or otherwise, has been a particular challenge for me. In a lot of ways I tend to be extremely hard on myself (perhaps this is the source of my motivation). The … Continue reading

You Can Do It

Who among us hasn’t been inspired by the amazing physical prowess displayed by the Olympians in Beijing? If nothing else I’m sure there have been times when the competition has motivated you to get up off the couch to cheer on your favorite athlete. So there–you expended at least a few calories by standing, raising your arms, yelling and cheering. Compared to how many calories the athlete is expending it might seem insignificant, but if you live a relatively sedate life it’s at least a step in the right direction. The point is: expending calories in an effort to lead … Continue reading

Olympic Inspired Fitness Routines

Have you been swept up by Olympic fever? The drama that has unfolded in Beijing over the past nine days has drawn record viewership for NBC and swim schools across the nation have seen a surge in enrollment thanks to the amazing work of one Michael Phelps, the man who now holds the title of winningest athlete in Olympic history. Unofficial polls show that the Summer Games in China have inspired at least a few people to get up and get moving—-even if it’s just to leave the couch to grab a soda from the fridge. In all seriousness, the … Continue reading

Primary Time: Assigning Talks

Children need to be given the chance to speak in Primary. These talks help the children become comfortable speaking in front of others. It really can prepare them for giving talks in Sacrament meeting and teaching lessons at church. One of the key points of having successful talks, prayers and scripture sharing is good communication with the parents. Here are a few tips to make it work better. 1) There are several different ways to assign talks. You may assign them on a rotating basis or you may have the names drawn out of a hat. Spring Forward to Action 2007: Week 2, Day 2

Welcome to Day 2 of this week, it’s Tuesday and I officially have the stomach flu – boo-yah! Yes, I know sarcasm doesn’t always translate well when it comes to writing. I recognize that for myself and yes, I don’t feel that great at the moment, but I plan to do my best where my workout is concerned. Daily Goal The key to working out when you feel sick is to monitor your own physical well-being. If you have a temperature or you are really not feeling up to it, then you need to listen to your body. When you … Continue reading

Be Your Own Yoda: How to Keep Yourself Going

Star Wars is one of my favorite series of films. In fact, the original Star Wars movie, released in 1977, was one of the first movies I ever saw in a movie theater. In the second movie of that series, Luke is tutored by Yoda in the ways of being a Jedi Knight and during the course of the grueling physical and mental training, he tells look: do or do not, there is no try. Do or Do Not; There is No Try So how can you become your own Yoda? It’s not necessarily about having the motivational tapes or … Continue reading

What’s the Best Way to Boost Your Mood?

Easy answer: exercise. That’s almost too easy, right? But here’s the thing, exercise is a great mood booster and it helps you to relieve stress, tension and excess energy – but at the same time, it boosts your energy levels. This is one of those cases where you do get more out of it than what you put in. Short Walk A short walk can get your heart rate up and can actually give you a mood and energy boost. Feeling tired and depressed? Hop on the treadmill for ten minutes. Can’t shake the yawns and actually feel yourself fading … Continue reading
