For the Love of Runningby Michele Cheplic | More from this Blogger 11 Jul 2009 09:05 AM I don't love to run. In fact, on most days I dread the thought of having to lace up my Brooks Ariels and hitting the trails near my home. Still, I do it, because it is a cheap way to maintain a decent fitness level and it allows me to occasionally devour my daughter's leftover jelly donuts with the least amount of guilt possible. Apparently I am not the only one. According to a new survey, more and more people are turning to running as a way to get fit. Officials from some of the biggest marathons and triathlons in the country recently reported record numbers of participants, many of whom were first-time competitors. For example, in Philadelphia, officials say around 23,000 registered to compete in the 10-mile Broad Street Run last year; ten years ago, they had about a third of that number. So what's the reason behind the bump in race numbers? Some running experts reason that the explosion in resources available to first-time runners is what's driving the boom in road race participants. I wouldn't be surprised if that was part of the reason. After all, one look on the Internet and you'll see that there are hundreds of books, websites, "e-coaching" programs and DVDs all aimed at aiding the beginning runner to achieve his or her best time. Not for nothing, but I speak from experience when I say that no book, website, or high tech running gear (except for proper fitting shoes) will make a marathon or triathlon any easier for a first-timer. The key to surviving 26.2 miles is simple: proper training, planning, and careful attention to one's health, limitations and injuries. I also think there is a benefit to joining a local running club or running with a more experienced partner, especially if you are training for your first race. Of course, you don't have to participate in a race to express your love for running. Many daily joggers are content with running simply for the health benefits. Why do you run?
