Happy New Year

If you are a single parent chances are while all everyone else is out on the town celebrating you are at home with the kiddos. It’s time to start a new tradition. Have a New Years Eve party with the kids. If you have other single parent friends then you can all get together and celebrate with the kids. Have a little party, make sherbet punch and lots of finger foods. Make a Happy New year banner and hang it up. As part of the party have the kids make noisemakers and streamers. Toilet paper rolls filled with dried beans … Continue reading

Keep New Year’s Resolutions Realistic – Ideas for Young People

Earlier I joked that my daughter’s New Year’s resolution should be doing the dishes every night without being told. What I should have suggested was that she brush her teeth twice a day without whining and complaining. Then again, that would be more of a miracle than a resolution. Regardless, she wasn’t very receptive to either proposition. That’s the thing about New Year’s resolutions; you have to want to make a change in order for them to work. Still, there are many kids out there, who are more than willing to take on a New Year’s resolution, especially if they … Continue reading

Forget the New Year’s Resolutions

I realize this may not be a very popular thing for me to say but I am starting off my first fitness blog for the year 2011 with this, forget the New Year’s Resolutions. Why? They typically don’t work. It’s like Moses and the children of Israel who wandered around in the desert for 40 years. Do we really want to keep going around and around the same old mountain? I don’t mean to make light of the changes that many of my friends are attempting to make but it is almost humorous to me the Facebook statuses that I … Continue reading

Making a New Year’s Resolution for Marriage

This is a good time to reflect and take stock and make resolutions that will improve the quality of your marriage. I loved this recipe for beauty in Zaphon a writing newsletter I periodically receive. For attractive lips, speak words of kindness For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed and redeemed – never throw out anyone. As you grow older, you will discover that you … Continue reading

Making Healthy and Reasonable Resolutions

It’s that time of year: time to start thinking about New Year’s resolutions. I like the idea of a fresh start for the New Year. But I don’t always stick with my resolutions. I think that’s because I try to make them too big and too broad. Know what I mean? Get in shape. Eat better. Exercise more. They’re kind of nebulous and easy to forget. According to USA.gov, the most popular New Year’s resolutions include: Losing weight/exercising more/getting into shape Eating better/eating right Managing debt/saving money Quitting smoking Reducing stress Getting a better job Getting a better education Travel … Continue reading

My Healthy New Year’s Resolutions

This past year has been full of big changes for me. The biggest one was my cross-country move. I am no longer one of the primary caretakers for my grandmother — the only person I have to take care of is myself. Well, myself and the dogs. But now that it’s just me, I have to confess that I’ve gotten somewhat lazy when it comes to my own care. Here are the things I’d like to do in 2008 for better health: Walk more. Yes, I walk the dogs at least four times each day, but it’s not the same … Continue reading

Woulda, Shoulda, Coulda – Resolutions & Change

It’s time for making new resolutions and changes. It’s a time for planning ahead to the New Year. It’s a time to think about the things you want to do and the changes you want to make in your life and for your life. The two most often made resolutions and most often broken are to eat less and exercise more. I’m sure if we made a plan to eat more and exercise less, we’d do just fine, but the truth is – we need to stop saying I should do this or I could do this or I would … Continue reading

4 Tips to Help You Keep Your Resolution

As I blogged yesterday, my New Year’s Resolution is to lose weight – again.  The thing about making weight loss a resolution is that so many people do it (especially after all those holiday pounds!), but many fail to follow through. What can you do to keep your resolution?  There are a few hints from psychologist John Norcross on how to keep those resolutions: Believe it can be done. That’s right – don’t let the haters keep you down, saying “You can’t do that.”  Believe in yourself that you can succeed. Be realistic. I am never going to weigh 120 … Continue reading

The Trouble With Optimism

Optimism is a wonderful quality for a home – based professional to have. It can help you to stay motivated and to have faith in yourself that you are doing the right thing, and that any setbacks that you encounter are temporary. However, sometimes optimism can get you into tough situations rather than out of them. Since I tend to be a little overly optimistic from time to time, I thought that it may be useful to remind myself and any other overly optimistic folks out there of the times when being optimistic can be a little problematic. One potential … Continue reading

I Must Exercise

In the hustle and bustle of my busy life sometimes I forget to take care of myself. Everyday it seems like my to do list gets longer and longer and time for me gets pushed farther and farther to the bottom. Winter is especially hard, I get a little depressed in the winter, nothing bad, just a little SAD (seasonal affective disorder) but one major downside is that I get very lazy. Everything becomes just too much work. My house falls apart, I don’t cook and I certainly don’t exercise. All I want to do is lay on the couch … Continue reading
