Reducing Holiday Stress

A fit lifestyle encompasses more than just eating right and exercise.  It includes getting enough sleep, cutting out bad habits such as smoking and other areas that affect your overall health. In fact, stress can wreak havoc on your body and may even contribute to weight gain.  With the holidays in full swing, its time to think about the impact that stress can have on your body. Medical experts say that this is the time of year in which people are prone to heart problems, such as heart attacks.  Stress can be physical, emotional, financial or a combination. For some, the thought of the holidays brings a sense of dread…hard to believe it is almost that time again. Then for others it brings a sense of cheer. So that means we will be faced with holiday eating temptations yet again. How did you manage last year? Did you hold up or did you buckle? I think it’s important that when it comes to fitness, we not … Continue reading

Gearing Up for Halloween Scrapping

Within 72 hours of Labor Day officially ending, our local Wal-Mart began removing back-to-school supplies and filling the empty shelves with Halloween paraphernalia. No, I still can’t get over it. If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em, right? Today, I started sorting through my Halloween scrapping supplies, hoping that I had enough leftovers from last year to get me through 2010’s Nightmare on Candy Street. Fortunately, I have a variety of stickers, rub-ons, rubber stamps, charms, and die-cuts to make several decent Halloween-themed layouts. However, I will need to purchase additional decorative patterned papers, given that the ones I bought … Continue reading

Splurging

Although I recently shared “5 Tips for a Fitter Thanksgiving,” I don’t want to give anyone the impression that you absolutely can’t or shouldn’t splurge. In fact, I might not follow my own tips. I think it comes down to the reality that splurging doesn’t necessarily cancel out all of the work you have done up until Thanksgiving. Your exercise and healthy eating doesn’t go out the window. You won’t suddenly put on 10 pounds because you enjoyed one day of good food. At the same time, I failed to mention in my last blog that not everything you prepare … Continue reading

5 Tips for a Fitter Thanksgiving

Hosting the Thanksgiving meal this week, I have a lot to do. And I will be honest…exercising is not one of the first things on my mind. In fact, if I could have my way, it would be skipped this entire week. At least that’s what the “old” me would have done. I would have gone into this week thinking, “I already know that I will be eating more than I usually do come Thursday, so why bother to workout?” The thinking is that I will just start again on Monday. But like I said, that is what the old … Continue reading

Shrimp-tastic Snacks for Your New Year’s Day Party

T-minus 30 hours until my dad’s HUGE Sugar Bowl. For those of you who haven’t been following this epicurean countdown, my father (along with the rest of the state) is gearing up for the most anticipated college football game ever to be broadcast in the land of Aloha. On New Year’s Day Hawaii’s Warriors will take on the Georgia Bulldogs in New Orleans. In honor of UH’s trip to the Big Easy my dad plans to incorporate a few regional dishes in his party buffet. Besides the jambalaya he’ll be making the following shrimp dishes. Fresh shrimp is readily available … Continue reading
