The Fitness Blog Week in Review: November 11-17

Welcome to the end of an eventful week, as I described in last week’s Fitness Blog Week in Review, I’ve been trying to quit smoking. I slipped this week and you’ll see more on that in Day 11: Falling off the Horse later on today, but in the meanwhile, here is our Fitness Blog: Week in Review. Sunday, November 12 In Day 5: My Throat Hurts and My Sinuses Hate Me I described how I was doing in the cravings department, although Saturday I was miserable ill. We thought it might be the detoxifying, but as it turns out it … Continue reading

Give Yourself Weight Loss for the Holidays

It’s the holiday season and while Santa may be a jolly old soul with a belly that jiggles like a bowlful of jelly, that doesn’t mean the rest of us are interested in the same. So it’s time to make a few lifestyle changes in order to give yourself some weight loss instead of weight gain for Christmas. The average person puts on about 5 pounds between Thanksgiving and January 1st. 5 pounds sounds like a lot, but it’s really not. To burn one pound, you need to burn 3500 calories, you can do this in 7 days by putting … Continue reading

Thankful Thanksgiving

Can you believe that next month is already Thanksgiving? It comes earlier every year. What do you think of when someone says “Thanksgiving”? Sadly, we have been conditioned to think of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie before we think of gratitude. We focus on the harvest and not the thankful heart for the harvest. Our association is with the food and that association not only keeps us from observing the holiday correctly it leads to overeating and thinking that its okay. Thanksgiving is coming quickly and you need a game plan because it isn’t just one … Continue reading

Book Review: From Fat to Fit

From Fat to Fit: Turn yourself into a weapon of Mass Reduction By: Carole Carson Book rating: 5 out of 5 carrots I know many of you read my post yesterday where I did not full endorse Carole Carson’s tip about only eating what you can put on a fork during the holidays. Yes, I am skeptical. I did agree that mindless holiday munching would pack on pounds yet there are enough forkfuls of food out there to gain the same amount of weight. That is simply my opinion. That nugget of advice may just save many of you from … Continue reading

Lose 5 Pounds with Yoplait!

I only eat one kind of brand of yogurt. I walk through the dairy aisle of my store and pass up half a dozen brands to get to my favorite. A few times a good sale caught my wandering eye and I cheated on my favorite brand with another. Each time I was disappointed and begged forgiveness to the only yogurt for me. All other yogurts are runny, have boring flavors or have that distinct yogurty taste I dislike. Are you suggesting that I really don’t like yogurt? I’ve considered that myself many times. Yet, my Yoplait never disappoints in … Continue reading

End of the Month Check In

It’s time to close out October and reflect if our time spent has put us closer to our weight loss goals. So how are you doing? Have you lost weight? Have you decided to get a new attitude? Have you taken the time to laugh at yourself and brush off setbacks and keep trekking? This month we have tried to find fun and humor in weight loss and body image. I do hope a laugh, if in fact it was funny, made your day brighter. We also covered plenty of recipes for that fall beauty the pumpkin. I hope the … Continue reading

Will You be Mistaken for Santa this Christmas?

Believe it or not Christmas is 92 days away! That is three months and 2 days to fit into that Christmas dress you have been dying to wear. Will you do it? I know this year I do not want to worry I’ll be mistaken for Mrs. Claus if I decide to wear red. This could be Christmas number 5 that I wanted to wear this one skirt in particular but can’t get my sugar plum bottom into it. I keep telling myself that I have an excuse seeing as how I have a knee injury that requires me to … Continue reading

Feeling Guilty About Thanksgiving? Seven Tips to Help Curb Holiday Overeating!

If you celebrated Thanksgiving yesterday, I hope you had a lovely day full of good food and great family and friends. I also hope you have no regrets about your eating behaviors. Thanksgiving and other holidays tend to encourage bad habits. The meals are full of “special” foods we don’t get on a regular basis, so there can be a feeling that you NEED to overindulge because you’re not going to see it again for another year. Plus, there’s just SO MANY good foods to sample — you don’t want to insult the chefs by not filling your plate, right? … Continue reading

Confessions of a Foodie Mom: Food as Atmosphere?

Last night I had dinner at my parents’ house, along with my husband and kids, my sister and her husband and kids, and my aunt. There were 13 of us in all. Italian food is Mom’s specialty, what I remember from growing up. I’m allergic to perfumes and fragrances. (This is relevant, really.) My mom was too, so I didn’t grow up with them. Once when I had to leave a party because of heavy fragrance, I wondered aloud to my husband, “Why do people need to use this stuff, anyway?” “Well,” said my husband, “didn’t you ever have a … Continue reading

A Day in the Life of a Nurse: The Hours We Keep

You name it, they have it! A nurse’s hours generally run your typical “shift” schedule, as a factory does. There is the 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift, the 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. shift, and the 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. shift, give or take 30 minutes. However, as we have advanced through the years the choices have become numerous. There are now options in some places to work three, 12-hour shifts and receive full-time pay and benefits. There is also the choice to work weekends only or weekdays only. You may even be able to work just holidays. … Continue reading
