“Groundhog Day“, starring Bill Murray, is one of the those movies that no matter how many times you watch it, its still pretty funny. Of course, it feels like you’ve seen it a zillion times, even if you’ve watched it only three, because of the crux of the story. Phil Connors, a TV Weatherman, is a real jerk. He’s stuck with the job of reporting on the Punxsatawny Phil groundhog for the fourth year in a row and he’s not too happy about it. Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival 2012

Disney fans have one big sign for the coming of spring, and it has nothing to do with a certain ceremonial groundhog. Nope, it’s something much more floral. Once the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival has kicked off, we know that spring is coming. Of course this is a bit of a cheat; as I said last year, the festival takes place in Orlando. Romancing Candlemas: Light Your Fire with Old Traditions

Before Valentine’s Day comes Candlemas. (Which is also known as Groundhog’s Day in some circles. However, for our purposes –which is to bring romance into our lives on February 2– I’m sticking with the day’s more poetic name.) What is Candlemas? It all started back in ancient times with Imbolc, a pagan ceremony that celebrated the halfway point between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox. In 496 A.D., Gelasius, the Pope of that time, set February 14th as the day to honor the Saint Valentine. This holiday became one where lovers exchanged their messages and Saint Valentine eventually became the patron of lovers and love. Here in the United States, a woman named Esther Howlands, receives the credit for the first Valentine cards. She sent those in the 1840s. Six More Weeks of Winter or an Early Spring?: Punxsutawney Phil’s 2007 Prediction

He’s kind of like Santa Claus. There’s only one day a year when Punxsutawney Phil, the “prognosticating groundhog,” is called upon to do his job and today was it. This morning, amidst much pomp and circumstance in front of thousands on Gobbler’s Knob, Punxsutawney Groundhog Club Inner Circle members John Griffiths and Ben Hughes pulled Phil from his burrow.
