Happy Kids

Yesterday I was in a funk of a day. I had not gotten enough sleep the night before, which always leads to me dragging all day long. I find that I struggle more with my responsibilities as a mother when I feel this way. I want to be lazy, I am not as patient, I feel bad for not keeping my kids engaged in something worthwhile. Unfortunately, I like to believe that every mother has a day or two like this now and then. We are not perfect as mothers. Some days, our kids watch a lot of TV. That … Continue reading

Happy Father’s Day Mom

Today was Father’s Day. I spent the day having a BBQ with some friends, none of our children were in attendance. We are single mothers, this is not our day. Yet for many of us, it still is. Getting your child for a day or two a month is not what it takes to be a father. Sending a child support check but not coming to their choir performance, is not what makes a father. Just like being a mother, being a father is made up of a million little things, most that we do without thinking. My daughter has … Continue reading

We Are All New At Parenting

It’s such a beautiful day today. I took a walk around my neighborhood just enjoying the day, watching all the little ones out playing in the sunshine as their mom’s hovered close by. It’s so cute to watch people interact with their toddlers. We all try to reason and use logic and all that toddler can think is I. Want. it. Now. As I walked I saw one of the moms shoot me an embarrassed smile as her tiny little one threw a tantrum. I smiled back, thinking how hard we all are on ourselves as mothers. We want our … Continue reading

It has been said that parents of kids who have special needs have a more extreme version of parenting. Happy Mother’s Day to all of you! Let’s face it: moms do a lot! This is not to say that dads don’t contribute, because they do. Often, though it is the mothers who take on the biggest part of parenting. A study found that parents of children who have autism face … Continue reading

Moms: Of Gifting to Ourselves

Did you get exactly what you wanted for Mother’s Day? I didn’t get what I asked for; instead, I got something even better. My fellow blogger, Stephanie, got what she wanted, a coffee machine, but it didn’t come from any of her children, or even her spouse. Rather, the self assured mother of three took the initiative to purchase the appliance, and gifted it to herself. Some may consider Stephanie’s move audacious, while others may consider it empowering. Personally, I classify it as self preservation. A requirement for many mothers out there. If you aren’t going to look out for … Continue reading

Mother’s Day in Review

Another Mother’s Day another dis by the Dyson fairy. Surprisingly, I am not at all disappointed by the snub. In fact, of the six Mother’s Days I have had the honor of celebrating with my daughter, this may have been the best ever. The day started out with a series of hugs, kisses, and this gem: Six-year-old: Happy Mother’s Day, Mommy! Me: Thank you, honey! Six-year-old: You’re the best Mommy in the whole world. Me: Thank you. I wouldn’t be celebrating Mother’s Day if it weren’t for you. Six-year-old: Yup. Me: I wouldn’t even be a mommy if it weren’t … Continue reading

Parental Challenge #5,198: Cryptic Messages

What I’ve learned as a parent: I suck at beating the clock and apparently my decoding skills need major work too. Who knew that 21 hours of labor would be the easy part of parenting? I’ve been unscrambling my daughter’s cryptic messages for a few years now. “Mommy, I am so cold!” she used to say to me while wrapping her arms around her torso. My first reaction: Look at the thermostat to see if it was set too low, then grab a sweater for her, or in some cases, feel her head to make sure her shivering wasn’t the … Continue reading
