Fitness & Wellness Coming Down to the High School Level

I was talking to a friend of mine from out of state the other day and she told me an interesting story about the local high school in her area. The schools there are relatively small – the grades K through 8 are at one school with 9 through 12 at another. The K through 8 school has only 125 students and the high school has about twice that number. The relative size of the school helps with the new fitness program they are instituting in their gym and physical education classes. By taking a page from the local University’s … Continue reading

10,000 Steps and Counting: Setting Some Goals

Are you a perfectionist? I am. If Heather, or the book says that I have to walk 10,000 steps then 5,000 simply won’t do. The problem is that sometimes our desire to be perfect, sets us back or even worse, prevents us from getting started. If you think about it–it’s silly. I can’t walk 10,000 steps a day so I won’t try. . .but that’s how we think isn’t it? But remember our mantra? If you aim for nothing, you’ll get their every time. To aim for something you have to start somewhere. The question is. . .where to start? … Continue reading

Dear Heather: I Have A Question

I’d like to announce the beginning of a new feature here in the Fitness Blog – it’s the Dear Heather section and I’m going to use it to address some specific questions from readers that I receive through private messages periodically. While I’m not an expert on all the questions I’m asked, I do dig in for the answers and I’m hoping to provide you with as many answers as I can. Originally, the Dear Heather was scheduled to begin on Monday, but this weekend was a little crazy with my husband needing an emergency appendectomy. So look for this … Continue reading

The Fitness Blog Week in Review November 18-24

Good morning and Happy Saturday – what a crazy week this has been. For me, it involved taking some much needed down time and time off from the writing. Though you saw blogs from me here, most of these were written ahead of time when I could and others were written on the fly. My daughter and I planned to do a lot together this week, but she came down with a nasty cold at the beginning of the week so we spent a lot of our week snuggled up together and watching movies as we nursed her through her … Continue reading

Holiday Fitness Ideas: Why 10,000 Steps?

With the holidays fast on us, you or someone you love is likely going to be looking into different fitness plans and if you’ve heard a lot about 10,000 steps but always wondered why, let’s talk about the why here. Activity is positive and good. Any activity is better than none. 10,000 steps are the goal because the average sedentary person walks less than 3,000 steps a day at maximum. But it’s not just the steps themselves, it’s the way of thinking, acting and being. By making the commitment to 10,000 steps a day, a person is increasing their level … Continue reading
