What is Moderate-Intensity Exercise?

The government suggests that Americans engage in 150 minutes of “moderate-intensity physical activity” per week. But, have you ever wondered what qualifies as “moderate-intensity” exercise? Is it defined as walking, jogging, running, hiking, or does raking leaves count? Fitness experts have determined that a rate of at least 100 steps per minute achieves moderate-intensity activity. Meaning that if you were to purchase a basic pedometer and record 3000 steps in 30 minutes, then you would be participating in moderately intense exercise, and therefore engaging in a meaningful fitness program. For the record, pedometers are unable to measure activity intensity. However, … Continue reading

Aimee’s Health Resolutions for 2009

Looking back at 2008, I did manage to keep a few of my resolutions (and failed on some others). I haven’t been using the free gym at my complex, but I did discover that the hot tub is open all year. I have been walking more (with and without the dogs), and even got out on my bike a few times. I have lost twelve pounds over the last year, thanks to my work at the cats-only boarding facility. All that bending, lifting, and general running around has whittled me down a little without it seeming like “exercise” or “hard … Continue reading

Exercise Challenges: Big City, Little Income

Trying to find an affordable gym membership in a large city like Los Angeles, New York or Chicago can be more challenging than running a marathon in less than three hours. What Does the UN’s CRPD Actually Say?

Republican politician Rick Santorum posted on his blog that he was against the United Nation’s Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). He thinks it is going to take away the rights of parents to make decisions regarding their children. I have read the CRPD, and it says no such thing. What is the CRPD? It stands for Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The United Nations has put together a series of protections for children and adults who have disabilities. The purpose “is to promote, protect, and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all … Continue reading

This is a new idea, that hasn’t been considered until recently. On the other hand, there are some reasons why this connection might not as accurate as it seems. Children who have asthma could have an attack when exposed to a numerous amount of triggers. Humidity can increase the risk of an asthma attack, and so can certain allergens. Exposure to cigarette smoke can also cause an asthma attack, it can also be triggered by upper respiratory … Continue reading
