How Many Calories Do You Burn While Walkingby Heather Long | More from this Blogger 05 Mar 2007 01:15 PM When it comes to a walking program, I know some people are resistant because they do not believe they will burn enough calories when they are walking. Truth be told, jogging and cycling may be higher intensity sports, but higher intensity does not always mean you will burn the most calories you can because you may not be able to perform a high intensity exercise for a long period of time. Weight also plays a factor in the number of calories you burn - for a person that is overweight, they actually expend more calories in the effort than someone who weighs less and walking can be safer and easier to perform, thus encouraging them to walk longer and burn more calories - make sense? Counting Calories The following information was compiled from a couple of different fitness sites supporting personal trainers and fitness programs. Remember, these are all averages and are based on weight (in pounds) and the speed at which you are walking. For example, according to my information if you weight 175 pounds and you walk at an average speed of 3 miles an hour, you will burn about 5 calories per minute. That means 30 minutes of walking will burn 150 calories and if you walk 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week, you will burn about 750 calories per week. So based on your average weight and walking at a speed of 3 miles an hour, you will burn calories at the following rate:
For every ten pounds or so more you add, you burn an extra .5 calories, so based on that, someone who weights 235 pounds would burn about 7 calories per minute if they walked at the same rate. If they walk 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week, they will burn 1050 calories per week. So, as you can see, if you are counting calories, lifestyle walking can have definite benefits towards your weight loss program and staying in shape. If you have any questions or you do not see your weight listed here, feel free to drop me a note. We'll be referring back to this as we dive into our Spring Forward to Action Challenge next week. Can you walk 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week? Related Articles: My Little Inspiration: Our Local 1-Mile Walk Planning Ahead - Want to Walk a Mile? One question, though. How many calories do you burn if you walk for 30 minutes with a bag or Oreos? ;-) Heather Long (16954) 05 Mar 2007 01:19 PMThe same number of calories. The bag of oreos doesn't lose any calories because it's not walking, of course, if you're eating them then you're going to be replacing burnt calories too fast and probably put back more than you burned. drlynne (52) 22 Mar 2007 04:22 PMGreat post Heather. Being a fanatical hiker, I can feel the health benefits of walking. When I talk to people about weight loss though, I strongly recommend limiting portion sizes at the same time so they don't get discouraged. American women are consuming 335 calories more per day than they did 30 years ago. Based on these numbers, the typical American women would have to walk 75 a minutes per day simply to maintain her weight, not lose! Keep up the walking! I have been very unhealthy for years now due to severe depression. I am now getting my life back on track and have been going to the gym for the past month now. Now I am (as embarassing as it is to say it publicly) 22 years old (male), 362 lbs (I am thick and most dont think I am that big), 5'11" and I walk the treadmill every morning (before I eat Breakfast) usually at 3.0-3.4 at an incline at 3.0 (for 55 mins/+5min cooldown so 1 hour)...any idea about how many calories I am burning and I eat when I get home (usually less than 350 calories in food) so am I doing right? I eat roughly 1900-2300 (depends) calories a day with my fat intake at or below 25 grams.... am I doing good and do you have any suggestions for me?
