Don’t Forget to Take Care of Yourself

As a mother it is natural to put our children’s needs above our own. While there is nothing wrong with this, it is important to remember to take care of your needs as well. Your kids need a healthy mommy to take care of them, which means like it or not, you can’t push your needs aside anymore. You have to take care of yourself, so you are still around to take care of them in the future. As a woman yearly exams are crucial. It doesn’t matter how old you are, how healthy you think you may be, there’s … Continue reading

Started Using Muscles They Forgot About

AS I mentioned in my last entry my whole family is on this weight loss journey with me. My middle son is so proud of the progress he is making. He has a goal of being healthier basketball player. All three of the kids joined the local basketball team and a condition of it was they had to eat healthier, drink more water and use the exercise bike for 30 minutes 2 times a day. Before we started our weight loss journey my son would always ask for soda or milk to drink; however now when he asks for a … Continue reading

Getting Back Into Trail Running

Today I went for a power hike that turned into a trail run. I started my workout with hiking over half a mile. After power hiking, I jogged for as long as I felt comfortable about fifteen minutes, then eased into some intervals of power hiking and sprinting spurts. Trail running to me is like taking your hike to the next level. You push yourself harder and blast calories faster. However, because of this it is harder on your body. Trail running is a great outdoor workout. If you like to run in your neighborhood and you like nature, trail … Continue reading

Running Away, or Running Toward?

My parents divorced after twenty-six years. It threw our family into a tailspin, but after the dust settled and we started to look at patterns and how it all could have come about, we identified many contributing factors. I’d like to share some of those factors with you. My mother was raised in an abusive home. She left for a time to go to college, but she knew that marriage was the only way she’d be able to leave permanently. My father was raised with the expectation that he was to get married, but without a more clear goal, such … Continue reading

Join the Revolution – Get Free Food from IHOP

Most revolutions are started because a group of people really want to see some important changes happen. IHOP, however, has created a revolution designed to give people some free food. Join the Pancake Revolution, and become one of the people… who gets a free meal. Pancakes to the People! Even if you aren’t someone who usually enjoys breakfast food, you probably still enjoy pancakes from time to time. Pancakes smell great, and you can top them with your favorite fresh fruit, or choice of syrup. I recently had some of IHOP’s traditional buttermilk pancakes, with maple syrup on them, when … Continue reading

Life’s Not Fair, Get Over It

Guilt, guilt, guilt. Sometimes I think I should change my name to include that one word. When I divorced my husband, my daughter’s father, I  had a tremendous amount of guilt. What had I done? How would it affect Hailey? Would this cause her to rebel more as a teenager? If she rebels it will be ALL MY Fault. If she turns to drugs or alcohol, it will be ALL MY FAULT, I tore her family apart. I know I didn’t do it by myself. The destruction of my marriage was a joint venture, my ex husband and I both … Continue reading

More Ways to Make Running Fun

I have Oprah Winfrey to thank for making my hour-long runs tolerable. When I was training for my first marathon (in the dead of winter) I would run on the treadmill at my gym. I always chose the treadmill that was located in front of the largest TV, so I could have some sort of distraction while I logged my daily miles. Since I worked out at the same time each day I eventually got hooked on Oprah. Needless to say, her shows helped the time fly by. It was only after the season changed and I started running outdoors … Continue reading

Running: It’s All About the Shoes

It is for me anyway. I am a severe overpronator and I sustained a nasty injury as a result of not wearing proper shoes when training for my first marathon. That was nearly a decade ago and since then I have spent countless hours researching running and other sport specific footwear. If you are just getting started in a specific sport and are shopping for shoes I would suggest the following: Find a Reputable Specialty Shoe Store. With all due respect to discount retailers, if you want a quality pair of running shoes you need to shop at a store … Continue reading

Low Budget Halloween Flicks that Hit Big

I tired of reading about movies that costs hundreds of millions of dollars to make then don’t even break even at the box office. They usually feature some big name actor or actress that gets at least $15 to $20 million for the film. Yet, there are four low budget horror flicks that did the opposite. All four of the films I am going to talk about in this blog were filmed for less than a million total – $837,000 to be exact. Yet, the worldwide take has been more than $300 million combined for these films and that doesn’t … Continue reading
