How to … Practice the Correct Technique

We discussed the fact that boredom is a factor in maintaining your workout program and not falling into a trap. There is another danger that can make you give up your workout before you have achieved your goals or felt any measured success. This trap is performing a workout incorrectly. Correct Form Every form of exercise has a correct form from walking to running to weight lifting to dancing in an aerobic class. You need to understand how to perform the exercises correctly so that you can maximize your results and minimize your risk of injury. While new exercises are … Continue reading

Achieving Abstract Images

Now that you know how to snap shots of waterfalls to make them look as though cascades of cottony streaks are flowing over rocks, let’s turn our attention to techniques that allow you to achieve other abstract images. As I mentioned in a previous blog, long shutter speeds allow for intentional blurring, which in most cases, help to enhance images. The same blurring technique can also be used to experiment with more abstract photos, provided you make a few minor modifications. Rather than simply increasing the shutter speed, consider adjusting your camera’s zoom as well. By using a long shutter … Continue reading

Book Review: Relax into Stretch

In a recent blog, I talked about increasing flexibility through yoga. If you are looking for exercises to increase flexibility, there is a book that may help. Relax into Stretch: Instant Flexibility Through Mastering Muscle Tension by Pavel Tsatsouline is a good place to start. Often, tension in the muscles is responsible for reduced flexibility. The key, according to Tsatsouline, is to teach the muscles to relax. If you have trouble fully relaxing the muscles when stretching in yoga poses, the technique in this book may help you. Key components to the methods in Relax into Stretch include mastering the … Continue reading

Modifying Behavior-Lesson 1, Part 2: Know Thyself

I decided I needed to back up the bus a little. I might have jumped the gun proceeding to Lesson 2: Trial and Error. I thought of something else that’s crucial to modifying a pets behavior before you get to this step. It’s determining YOUR style of discipline. As I alluded to in The Dog Whisperer: The Latest Craze in Doggie Discipline, I’m not too crazy for his techniques. Or, rather, I’ve never been too impressed with the people needing him on the few shows I’ve watched. I felt that using a little common sense in the first place would … Continue reading

Changing the Rules

There are business rules, right? There is a correct way to do things, definite techniques and protocol that work, there are ways we should be going about this home business endeavor. Or are there? What is so wrong with shaking things up and changing the rules—especially if it helps us grow and energize our home-based businesses? Okay, there are definitely “best practices” for most industries and for business as a whole. There are also laws and things we HAVE to do—like pay taxes and apply for any pertinent licenses and such. But do we always have to follow the “experts” … Continue reading

B is for Bad Form

We talked about A is for Abdominals a couple of days ago and today, we’re going to talk about Bad Form. Bad form happens when we’re in a rush. You know what it’s like to rush around, you have a dozen errands to do and you may only have 30 minutes to hit the gym while your son or daughter is at their dance class or other activity. When we rush things and we try to squeeze too many activities into too little time, we make mistakes. B is for bad form because when we use bad form, we are … Continue reading

Spruce Up Your Fitness Routines

We’re having a garage sale this weekend. We’re cleaning out all the clothes that no longer fit my daughter and we’re putting out for sale everything from shoes to pants to dresses and more. We’re cleaning out cupboards in the kitchen too and selling a dish set that we never use and much more. You can do more to clean up your fitness act than just cleaning out the closets. Let’s talk about how we can give our fitness routines a spring/summer spruce and get rid of the parts of your routine that aren’t doing it for you anymore. How … Continue reading

Handwriting Without Tears

My school has recently adopted a handwriting program, Handwriting Without Tears. This program focuses strictly on penmanship. The goal of Handwriting Without Tears is to provide all students the ability to write clearly and correctly. The program uses a variety of sensory techniques. It is designed to meet the needs of all types of learners. Teachers and parents are given ideas and activities to improve a child’s posture, handgrip, self-confidence, body awareness, and more. The program has its own workbook, paper, pencil, and supplement materials. The instruction is easy to follow and requires little preparation. The program uses three levels … Continue reading

Can Your Child Use a Word Processor?

If your child is in third grade or older, knows letters and words, and has reasonable functioning of the hands and fingers, he or she can benefit from learning to use a word processor. Children with all kinds of learning disabilities and especially those with ADHD or dysgraphia should have a word processor available for them to use at home, if at all possible. I remember when my oldest son was in his first years of elementary school. Every time I went to parent-teacher conferences I was told, “He does good work and scores very high on tests, but his … Continue reading
