Does Your Toddler Test Your Patience?

Today was a particularly trying day for me. It seemed as if each time I asked Dylan not to do something, he look right at me and did it anyways. Also, he had a couple of tantrums over things that I could do nothing about. For example, he wanted to play with Play Doh and I could not find any in the house. For about forty five minutes he let me know how upset he was that I did not have the Play Doh that he needed. The whole day seemed to flow from one limit testing scenario to another … Continue reading

Thank You For Calling, Have A Nice Day

Have you ever noticed that when you call various businesses in the course of your everyday life, each phone call is a unique experience that tells you a little bit about the business that you are calling? Sometimes your call is answered after only one or two rings by someone who is polite, knowledgeable, and helpful. You feel like that business cares about our needs, and you are able to get what you need out of the conversation. Other phone calls are really frustrating. You may get automated instructions that take you through twenty different questions before you finally decide … Continue reading

You Know Your Spouse Loves You When…

Elizabeth Barrett Browning once started off a sonnet with what has perhaps become a bit of a cliched saying: How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. Have you ever tried to count the ways you love your spouse? Once upon a blog I wrote about something Wayne did for me that showed me he loved me, and then Jade asked: But what do you do to show him? So I answered that with another blog. While that was sort of counting the ways he loves me and I love him, lately my heart’s been waxing romantic about … Continue reading

Diary of a Cat Care B&B: Why Am I Working Here, Anyway?

I was chatting with a client at the cats-only boarding facility, and mentioned (as I often do) my two dogs, Moose and Lally. The client asked if I had any cats, and I said that I didn’t. She then asked me why I was working at a cat place if I didn’t have any cats. My usual answer is this: “So I won’t be tempted to bring any of them home!” And that is part of the reason. We’ve had abandoned kitties staying at the boarding facility before. While I did become somewhat attached to them, I knew I couldn’t … Continue reading

Are You the Biggest Problem in Your Relationship’s Difficulties?

There’s a local news show in Nashville called Tennessee Mornings. Normally I watch Today during breakfast, but yesterday while a commercial was running I flipped channels. Which proved fortuitous because I flipped right when they were interviewing Joe Beam, a relationship expert. Apparently he has a national talk show called Give & Take with Joe Beam. I didn’t catch the entire interview, but from the bit I did catch I immediately discerned a couple of things. One, Mr. Beam has an incredibly friendly and warm style. Two, he’s also ultra sensible and direct in his views. But he’s not abrasive … Continue reading

“Mom, I Was Worried About You”

In most cases, my kids could pretty much set their watches by me. While my personality is definitely spontaneous and I am willing to take risks and try new things, family life has also made me a rather reliable and loyal sort. I make plans, leave notes, and have tried to set an example for my kids of basic respect of time and commitments. The downside to all this responsibility is that when I do shake things up a bit and change my schedule—my kids get a bit worried! It is an interesting flip of karma for me since my … Continue reading
