Blogging From the Personal Side of Parenting

The internet has a wealth of information about a vast variety of special needs. It is fairly easy to look up medical information or news articles regarding a special need. Sometimes, it can be comforting to read a blog written by a parent about the personal side of parenting a child who has a special need. Here are a few interesting ones to explore. Parents can get online and quickly look up symptoms, recommended diets, help with IEPs, and news about health insurance coverage for their child’s special needs. What about if all you want is some conformation that your … Continue reading

Good morning, with just four days left until Valentine’s Day, it’s been a very busy week here at the Marriage Blog. In case you missed any articles this week, here is our Marriage Blog Week in Review: Saturday, February 3 … Continue reading

Life is Not Fair

You hear stories all the time about dead beat dads, but what about those fathers who try and get nothing? I know so many men who try to do the right thing for their children after a divorce but still are not allowed to see their children. I knew that if a father did not financially support his children he could get in trouble, anything from having his license revoked to jail time. What I didn’t know is that there is no similar punishment for a mother who does not honor the custody visitation agreement. At least where I live … Continue reading

Handling Holiday Visitation

The holidays can be especially hard as a single parent. We all imagine what our lives will be like when we have children. We dream of picture perfect holidays watching the happy faces of our children as they share in our traditions. Then you get divorced and suddenly everything is not at all what you imagined. No one gets married and imagines that one day they will be divorced so of course we don’t ever imagine a time when our children will not be with us for the holidays. The first holiday or birthday that you are divorced is the … Continue reading

Kyra Sedgwick is a Distant Cousin to Her Husband

What would your reaction be if you discovered that you were a distant cousin to your spouse? Kyra Sedgwick appears to not be terribly bothered by the revelation that she and her husband Kevin Bacon are distant cousins to each other. I guess when you are married to the man that the game “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon” is named for, perhaps this type of news isn’t entirely unexpected. Have you ever played the game “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon” before? It has very simple rules, but can still be a challenging game. First, pick a celebrity that has been … Continue reading

For The Daddy-To-Be

When the topic of pregnancy comes up, 99% of the time, all the information, advice, and attention is given to the woman. After all, it is she who is carrying the child, dealing with the symptoms of pregnancy, and going through the unforgettable experience of childbirth. But what about dad? Today’s pregnancy blog is just for you, daddy-to-be. I want to give you a little credit for weathering the storm of our mood swings, driving to the store to get us ice cream and pickles at 3am, listening to us complain about our round ligament pain, and letting us squeeze … Continue reading

Do You Curse in Front of Your Kids?

How many times have you dropped the F-bomb in front of your children? Do you use the word S*%^ as an adjective? Think about it. I’m not referring to the time when you stepped on a handful of LEGOs with bare feet or took a header into the pavement when you were teaching your 5-year-old to ride without training wheels. I’m talking about regular use of curse words as part of your daily vocabulary. If you routinely use expletives in front of your kids without realizing it, then you might take note of a dad in Philly. A father in … Continue reading

Anorexia Nervosa: Dieting Out Of Control

Although this is a topic about dieting that has gone terribly out of control, it is also a very real psychological disorder. Anorexia nervosa, or anorexia is an eating disorder that is difficult to treat. It typically affects the female in 95% of the cases. I am sure that this is no surprise to anyone given our world of focus on the relation between beauty and thinness. However, this disorder can affect the male species as well. It usually makes itself known in the adolescent. Everything starts out relatively normal in the victim of this disorder. They begin by wanting … Continue reading

Diet Benefits of Avocado

“I love avocados and can get them really inexpensively. Is it OK to eat them when dieting or will the fat in them make me fat?” First, here is the nutrition information for an average avocado: One medium avocado has 276 calories, 27.6 grams of fat, 1.5 grams of carbohydrates, 4.3 grams of fiber and 1.5 grams of protein. Now before you take a look at the calories and fat content and run away screaming, know that avocados can actually be a very nutritious and helpful part of a balanced weight loss program. The monounsaturated fat in an avocado speeds … Continue reading

Diary of a Cat Care B&B: the Biggest Cat Ever

We have a very unusual guest at the cats-only boarding facility right now — the biggest cat I have ever seen. We’ve had some large guests before — I can think of at least one who weighed more than twenty pounds and a few who came very close to the twenty pound mark. But this cat tops them all. He tipped the scale at a whopping thirty-three pounds when he arrived. Everyone who comes in can’t help but notice the big guy in the isolation room. This poor cat was too big for our regular condos — he couldn’t even … Continue reading
