Study Links Autism to Unique Airway Shape

A study has found that kids who have a particular shape in the airways in their lungs all have autism, (or an autism spectrum disorder). Some parents may find this to be a relief, because it would mean that they didn’t do something that “caused” their child to have autism. There are some questions about the results of this small study. Is autism a disease, or a disability? This question has been debated for quite some time. There are people who will insist that certain types of vaccines “cause” autism, (which hasn’t been proven). You can find things online that … Continue reading

Exercise Boosts Your Brain at Any Age!

If you’re worried about your brain’s health, you might want to think about your physical fitness levels. A new study from the Center for Brain Repair and Rehabilitation at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden looked at the link between physical fitness and brain fitness (or, if you want to be technical about it, call it “cognitive function”). Researchers looked at data on more than a million Swedish men born between 1950 and 1976 who enlisted for military service at age 18. Included in those 1.2 million men were more than a quarter of a million siblings — and some … Continue reading

How Do You Respond When Your Toddler Cries?

Do you: A. Find the nearest couch and bury your head between the cushions. B. Beam with pride and revel in the sweet sound knowing that your little one’s lungs are obviously extremely healthy. C. Crying? What crying? I can’t hear a thing with these earplugs in. According to a new study, the way a mother responds to her screaming child may be the result of how well she bonded with her own mother. The recently published Baylor University study revealed that some moms experience a “natural high” while listening to their crying child, while others facing the same scenario … Continue reading

Burning Calories at Your Desk

While most of us pack on the calories while working at our desks (the occasional cookie, donut, or an entire BLT sandwich) there are some companies that are actually helping employees burn calories while on the job. A few weeks back I saw a report on ABC News about a Minneapolis law firm that has done away with traditional oak wood desk and leather chair combos and replaced them with treadmills and raised computer stands so employees can type and workout without leaving their cubicles. The report also profiled a guy from Illinois who has adopted the same concept in … Continue reading

Ways to Integrate Exercise into Your Life

No one says you have to train like an Olympian to shed pounds. You can burn calories simply by taking a moderately paced stroll around your neighborhood. The key is motivating yourself to making exercise a part of your daily life. I know; easier said than done, right? My suggestion: Start off slow, but be consistent. Here are some tips that have served me well over the years: Workout in front of the TV. That doesn’t necessarily mean watching an exercise video, it just means being an active TV watcher. Instead of vegging out on the couch while you watch, … Continue reading

Baby Blog Month in Review: July 2008

Two of my three children are summer babies. That is, they were born in the summer and had their first months surrounded by sunshine streaming in the windows, the sound of birds chirping, and days spent wearing nothing but a diaper and a “onsie.” I made sure that they had Fourth of July outfits ready, even though one of them arrived a week after the holiday. I guess he just wasn’t interested in the parade. Do you have a summer baby, too? We had a lot of new information to share this past month, such as recall notices and new … Continue reading

Finding Items to Alter With Your Scrapbooking Supplies

The best part of altered art is that it is an unending creative outlet. Altering something just means changing it from its original state or purpose. This makes unlimited possibilities with what you decide to alter. In my frugal living lifestyle, I am always reusing items for new purposes. But now the same can be said for my scrapbooking. Recently I altered an AOL CD cover and turned it into a case to hold a mini-scrapbook I created of my five children. However, the possibilities for what it could hold are simply endless. The scrapbooking industry is on top of … Continue reading

Can You Give Yourself 12 Weeks?

Julie Ann Sproles gave herself twelve weeks and lost forty pounds. She went from a size 16 to a size 6. In the grand scheme of things, twelve weeks really isn’t that much. It isn’t even one quarter of a year! When you consider how little work is involved in following the Body-for-Life plan and that you’ll put in less than an hour a day improving yourself, this question should be a no-brainer! Less than one hour a day for only 84 days? Come on! This is a piece of cake! Speaking of cake, you can eat that piece of … Continue reading

Visual Brainstorms – Game Review

Visual Brainstorms: The Smart Thinking Game comes with 100 sturdy over-sized playing cards. The cards are color coded for easy, hard, and extra hard questions. Some of the cards have bonus questions. Harder questions are awarded more points. Some have “visual” bonus questions that you can only answer by having paid close attention to the card before you flipped it over for the answer. This game can be played several ways. I like that it’s so flexible for rules and time limits. You can play as teams, or with one or two players. If you play as teams you can … Continue reading
