Jack LaLanne Dead at 96

When I was young with probably zero percent body fat, I often worked out with Jack LaLanne as I watched his television show. This was before Jane Fonda donned her headband and legwarmers, before there were any “of Steel” videos, and when “Biggest Loser” trainer Jillian Michaels was still in diapers. Jack LaLanne was THE crown prince of fitness when we weren’t even that overweight as a nation. Even back then – I think I was in 7th grade, so it had to be about 1975 – Jack LaLanne seemed old. I don’t mean the “well, I was young so … Continue reading

Health Benefits for Weight Loss and Fitness

I have recently gotten a new health plan. This prompted further investigation on my part as to any entitlement in additional health discounts on my new plan. I was happy to find that there were several discounts available for my use just by showing the company my new health plan identification card. Probably the best benefit that I found was for Bally’s. However, there were benefits for Jenny Craig, Jazzercise, Weight Watcher’s and more. I do not know if I will make any use of them, but it is nice to know that they are there just in case I … Continue reading

Controversial School Fitness Option—Pole Dancing, Anyone?

I realize that many college co-eds resort to uh, shall we say, creative means to pay for their educations, but I must admit I was a bit stunned when I heard that a European high school was actually making it easier for students to learn the ropes of pole dancing, in case they needed to put their skills to use in the future. Am I the only one who equates pole dancing with strip clubs? Apparently administrators at South Devon College in the United Kingdom don’t see the relation. In their eyes pole dancing is merely a source of fitness. … Continue reading

Excuses, Exercise & Excitement

When you talk about exercise, chances are you think more in terms of excuses than you do in terms of excitement. For example, you’re more likely to say: I’d work out more if I had more time than you are to say: I can’t wait to get on the treadmill and go for three miles – it’s the best time ever Excuses Excuses are a lot easier to come by. We can come up with a dozen excuses for why we don’t do anything. I didn’t do the dishes last night before bed because I was tired. I didn’t do … Continue reading

Play Me Something that I Can Down Dog To

If I had it my way, I would probably play nothing but Ravi Shankar in the yoga classes that I teach. His beautiful sitar playing, which is considered classical music in many circles, epitomizes what I feel when I practice yoga. Once he gets going, there are plenty of rhythmic qualities for a nice practice pace, and since yoga originated in India, I feel closer to the real essence of what I’m doing. Call me a traditionalist if you like. As you guessed, I don’t let myself have it my own way. Because I teach such a variety of students, … Continue reading

Earlier today, I gave you my review of Leslie Sansone’s Walk Away the Pounds: Power Mile DVD and now we’re going to take a look at Dance Fitness for Beginners: Daily Quickies: 10 Minute Workouts. The style of DVD is very different from the previous one as it utilizes different instructors to lead you through different styles of workouts. 10 Minute Quickies MaDonna Grimes offers the best aerobic workout on this DVD. Her aerobics get your heart up and racing. This is also not a beginner’s workout. The cardio stimulation is easy to follow and gives you a heart-pounding workout … Continue reading
