Budget Recipes: Easy Fruit Salads

It doesn’t always have to cost a fortune to feed your family. Pay attention to what kinds of foods are on sale at your local grocery store. You can put together a budget recipe that your family will enjoy. An easy to make fruit salad can become a quick breakfast or a healthy lunchbox snack. The grocery store that is located the closest to my home is Vons. This store likes to start its weekly sales on Wednesdays. This means that the sales in the current weekly paper start today, Wednesday, September 14, 2011, and will end on Wednesday, September … Continue reading

Tips for Recycling Magazines

If there is one thing we get in this house, it is a ton of magazines each week. Hardly a day goes by when we don’t get one and most days it is more than one. Considering my love for pop culture, I have to have my weekly People, Entertainment Weekly, Star Magazine, and Enquirer plus I get Ladies Home Journal, Readers Digest and that’s not even taking into consideration the magazines my husband and son get! Call me old fashioned, but I still like my magazines in paper form rather than reading them online. I know it isn’t very … Continue reading

Video Games and Being Green

Although we tried for many years to resist, I have to admit that last Christmas we broke down and purchased a video game system for the family. And while we certainly don’t regret the move for many reasons (it is great family fun, the kids aren’t obsessed, and we can be more of the hang out house for friends), the little piece that we do regret is the fact that it is one more thing in the house that was commercially manufactured, uses energy and will some day reach the end of its life and require disposal. There are some … Continue reading

Autumn Recipes: Z is for Zucchini

We made it. It took nearly a month, but today marks the last entry in our Autumn Recipes A-Z series. Hopefully, you’ve added a few new seasonal recipes to your fall repertoire and in the process you’ve been inspired to experiment with dishes that wouldn’t typically find their place on your dining room table. Today, we’re focusing on another seasonal ingredient: zucchini. The versatile, green vegetable (technically, part of the gourd family) can be added to both savory and sweet dishes. My favorite zucchini recipe comes courtesy of Food Network’s Paula Deen (no surprise). Her Chocolate Chip Zucchini Bread is … Continue reading

Baseball Tips for Kids (and Parents too!)

“Mom, can we go play some baseball together?” This question was posed to me recently by my six year-old daughter. My initial response was, well, no because two people do not make a team and it’s hard to play ball with just two people. But that’s not necessarily true. If you both have gloves, you can play catch. If you have gloves and a bat you can practice hitting. So it’s doable – but unfortunately for my daughter, I’m terrible at throwing. But what the heck, let’s give it a shot anyway. In the meanwhile, if you’re looking to organize … Continue reading

Kid Fitness: Red Light, Green Light

Have you ever played red light, green light with your little ones? The principle of the game is pretty straightforward. You say red light and your kids stop. You say green light and they start racing around or moving. Red light, stop. Green light, go. We started playing this particular game with our daughter when she was just 2 years old and by the time she was three, she knew what it meant. Red Light: Stop. Green Light: Go. This system can be applied to our activity levels, our eating choices and more. We teach our kids what’s good and … Continue reading

Cuisenaire Rods

When I was little, my mom brought home a box full of curious little pieces of wood in bright colors. These would help me learn math, she said. I didn’t see how, but they were fun to build with. As skeptical as I was, I gave them a try, and you know what, I actually did learn math. You see, each piece of wood represents a different number. The number one block is white, and it is one centimeter square. The number two is represented by a piece that is 2 centimeters by 1 centimeter, and is red. When you … Continue reading
