The Fitness Blog Week in Review for September 9 – 14

What a week it’s been here. I’ve spent four days substituting, I’ve been catching up on life, the universe and everything after my dental surgery last month and I feel great. I’m getting my workout back to something resembling normal and it’s only a few weeks until the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Last week, I asked and you answered and this week, we did our best to tackle those answers. Don’t worry if you didn’t see your question answered, we’ve got more coming next week! In the meanwhile, let’s review what we covered this week. Sunday, September … Continue reading

Maintenance: I Want To Keep The Weight Off!

The worst thing that happens to someone who loses weight is that they gain it right back. I know so many people who literally torture themselves to get the weight off, then six months later, they are back to the same grind. The trick, however, is not to crash diet and crash your weight loss efforts. Crash diets may be a way to burn 20 pounds quickly, but for people who need to lose more than 20 pounds, that crash could do more to hurt their efforts than help. If what you want to do is lose weight and keep … Continue reading

I Want to Know How to Keep the Weight Off

I asked and you answered. Today, we’re going to talk about keeping the weight off. In the world of fitness this is called “maintenance” – much like your car – you have to keep up your regular maintenance or you’re going to have problems. Sticking with the car analogy for the moment, let’s say that your car breaks down on the side of the road and you take it to a mechanic. The mechanic looks over the car, runs some diagnostics and fixes you up. Then he tells you that you need to get regular oil changes and tune-ups. Ideally, … Continue reading

Menopause and Weight Loss

Aging is an inevitable factor of life and so is menopause. This passage of life can occur when a woman is between the ages of 35 and 60. The age range is so wide because this natural occurrence is unique to the individual. It is believed that a woman will experience menopause close to the age that her mother went through it. Outside factors like a hysterectomy or radiation treatment can bring about menopause early. This life event can take more than a decade to run its course. There are three stages: perimenopause, menopause, and postmenopause. When a woman has … Continue reading

Too Good to Be True?

Most frugal advice should be practical and the strategies should be easy to implement. Everyday practices have to make sense, and actually save you money. Sometimes the advice is well-meaning but too good to be true for all but the most hard core savers. Here are a few of my choices for frugal advice, that while good, may also be too good to be true. Advice: Taking your crockpot on vacation. If you pack your crockpot with you on vacation, you can use this appliance to craft hearty, inexpensive meals and save on the high cost of eating out. Just … Continue reading

Cleaning the Gutters

Have you cleaned your gutters? This year some of the outside maintenance has gotten away from me. I’m pretty lucky because I only have on big tree in my yard, the other one is still too small to be a real problem. The big tree drops enough leaves to keep me busy raking, trying to get them all up before snow blankets the ground. I usually don’t think about my rain gutters too much, after all I only have one tree. Once again, I didn’t think too much about my gutters this year until my friend came over. Nancy said … Continue reading

Easy Picture Hanging Tips

Hanging a picture shouldn’t be rocket science. Yet, to me it is still intimidating. I am never sure if I will hang the pictures correctly or leave a gaping hole in the wall. I’m worried that I might smash a finger or two, since I can be a bit accident prone. My hesitation is obvious when you come to my house. The only pictures that are actually hanging on the wall are the ones where nails or hooks already existed when we moved in to the home. Needless to say, this arrangement doesn’t give me much flexibility in my decorating. … Continue reading

The Great American Gas Out Fizzles Out

Did you take part in yesterday’s Great American Gas Out? It was a grass roots movement to have all motorists boycott gas stations for one day with the hopes it would somehow have an impact on gas prices. One email I received promoting the boycott had a goal of taking $2.3 billion in oil company profits. Needless to say, gas prices in my area are just as high today ($3.30 a gallon) as they were yesterday. So to the man who I ran into yesterday in the check out line at Wal-Mart who insisted that one-day boycott had exactly zero … Continue reading

Getting my Mind Right: What Now?

I am officially in diet limbo. I have been wondering if I have lost enough weight and whether I should stop dieting and start the weight maintenance phase. The first few days of that did not go well. I gained six pounds immediately, so I have dieted it off and am back at 192. I got out the book that contains my written goals; they were not exactly as I remembered them. The goals were to weigh less than 220 by the middle of October, 2006. I actually weighed 202. Here is the goal that I forgot about; to have … Continue reading
