Mirror, Mirror

I struggled looking in the mirror for a long time after my ex-husband left. While nothing had changed physically, I had no idea who this woman was staring back at me. My identity had become so wrapped up in being a wife and mother that I honestly didn’t know who I was anymore. I had devoted my life to being just that. Now that I was no longer someone’s wife I didn’t know what to do with myself anymore. Who was this girl staring back at me? I was determined to find out. About a month after my husband left … Continue reading

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall…

This summer my 7-year-old daughter got her first taste of the Smurfs. I took her to see the little blue creatures’ movie in 3D and my brother purchased her Seasons One and Two of the animated 80’s show on DVD. I knew she wouldn’t count Smurfette as one of her favorites, but was surprised her fascination with Vanity Smurf. “Why does that Smurf always look in the mirror?” my daughter asked after watching an entire episode in which Vanity stared at and subsequently kissed his reflection more than a dozen times. Hmmm… how does one explain the habits of a … Continue reading

The Right Way to Add Mirrors to Your Home

Mirrors can add a lot to your home, from making it seem larger to offering a convenient way to check yourself before you leave your home. But to make the most of the positive power of mirrors, make sure to place them purposefully, strategically and in the right shapes and sizes for the space. You don’t want to wind up with a dated or unflattering look (remember the wall of mirrors that was so popular in the 80s?). First Select Your Area Where do you want to place a mirror, and what do you want its purpose to be? An … Continue reading

Mirror, Mirror, On the Wall

I am beginning to suspect that I will soon need to embrace the idea of the princess. Recently, my daughter went to a princess birthday party and returned with a lot of princess-related material. She’s showing definite signs of princess-interest. Symptoms include twirling around in pretty dresses and loudly proclaiming, “Look at me! I am a princess!” Now, at the moment I don’t think that my preschooler has any clue what a princess is. The idea of royalty is completely foreign to her. I haven’t explained royal succession or government structures, nor have we even read books or movies that … Continue reading

Mirror to the Future

Today my 6 week old son and his almost 1 year old cousin met through internet video chat. They’ve actually, technically, met before via skype. The previous meetings were, however, less than acceptable as a definition for “meeting.” My son was, at that time, only able to cry and eat and poop. He’s since gained a remarkable skill set including some knowledge of self. He can now identify his own hands. He is also finally old enough to take a pause between feedings to acknowledge the world that exists between his frequent and insatiable hunger. He can hold his own … Continue reading

Single Parenting: Look In the Mirror (For Single Moms Only)

Single parenting takes its toll on us. Hey, we cannot help it, or can we? Take a good look in the mirror. Do not get too close, however. We have to cut ourselves some slack, you know. You probably look tired and worn out and rightly so. If you think that there is nothing that you can do about it, you are wrong. Allowing yourself to become disheveled and dumpy will only drag you down even more. First of all, you have to find a quiet time to do this. Maybe when the kids go to sleep? Okay, if that … Continue reading

Madonna’s Divorce Could it Mirror Bill Murray’s?

Not likely, according to the countless media “experts,” who have been watching the split between the Material Girl and her husband Guy Ritchie unfold. For months rumors have been swirling that Madonna and Ritchie were headed for splitsville and now several TV and newspaper reports claim the pop star is seeking advice from Paul McCartney’s divorce attorney (this after initial talks with a rival law firm broke down). The singer reportedly met with Fiona Shackleton, the lawyer who represented McCartney during his court battle with Heather Mills and Prince Charles during his split from Princess Diana. Meanwhile, Ritchie has reportedly … Continue reading
