Mirror, Mirror on the Wall: I Hate Myself

We’ve all been there, a half-glance that catches your own image in the corner of your eye as you look into a mirror and the negative self-talk begins. Your legs are too thick, your tummy isn’t flat enough and your arms are fat. Kids may be the worst when it comes to teasing and saying things, but women are the worst when it comes to judging themselves and being self-critical. Unfortunately, when it comes to judging ourselves – we’re harsh and we always compare ourselves (often unfavorably) to other women and find ourselves lacking. Imagine looking at yourself in comparison … Continue reading

My Irrational Moment as a Parent

Ever have one of those irrational moments as a parent? The kind where you are so oblivious to how you are handling things that you are sure everyone else is crazy? Last week I had one of those. It was my son’s first official day of work. Up until then he had gone for either orientation or training but on his first official day he would be working a full five hours. He was supposed to text me when he got to work and text me when he was leaving. He was also supposed to come home and change before … Continue reading

Something You May Not Have Thought About

Today I’m going to talk about something you may not have thought about as affecting your marriage, but it is something I suspect a few of us are guilty of. I know I am. The issue is negative self talk. This was something that came up during marriage preparation classes for a young couple I know. When I talk about marriage preparation classes I’m not talking about those quick fix couple of hour’s courses that are supposed to give all the answers to how to prepare you for marriage or solve any problems in your marriage in one easy lesson. … Continue reading

Are You a Spoon?

Wondering what a spoon is outside of an eating utensil or a very a snuggly position with your spouse? Well, wonder no longer. A spoon is a body shape that means you carry excess weight on your hips, thighs and behind the knees. My legs are somewhat spoon like, even when I am at my peak weight; my legs are larger than my upper body would indicate. Spoon Doesn’t Equal Overweight Before you get the wrong idea, just because your lower body is larger than your upper body, don’t believe that this is an indicator of being overweight. I felt … Continue reading

Body Type Workouts – the Mesomorph

I told you we’d talk more about how your body type can influence your workout choices and in this case, we’re talking about the Mesomorph. So what exactly is a mesomorph? The mesomorph is built very athletically. A mesomorph can build muscle quickly and easily. They have a well-defined chest and shoulders that are typically larger and broader than your waistline. The hips are usually the same width as your shoulders and your trunk and lower body are well defined. Most people look at Mesomorphs with envy because they seem to be built for workouts, workout clothes and more. Most … Continue reading

What’s Your Body Type?

Do you know what your body type is? We use a lot of different descriptions for body types and they are all usually food related – not entirely sure why that is, but here are the more typical descriptions that we use: Pear Apple Carrot Stick None of these descriptions are particularly attractive and few of us grow up dreaming of the romantic, pear shaped prince or the stick figure princess. The body is can be described many ways whether we are referring to the geometry of them as pyramids, cylinders, cones or rulers or they can be referred to … Continue reading

Fitness Notes: How Do You See Yourself?

I was reading Kaye’s blog Confessions of an Avid Exerciser: My Deep Dark Secrets yesterday and I found myself grinning. I couldn’t fault the reason why she loves her daily exercise and what keeps her motivated. I like to eat too – in fact, I hate dieting with a raging passion. I hate being told I can’t have something to eat that I like a lot. It’s probably a psychological problem, but I don’t see myself that way. I just see myself as someone who enjoys life and so I look at my exercise as a way that I get … Continue reading
