The Best Exercises to Burn Major Calories

If you are a busy parent, who spends his or her day in a chaotic hurricane cooking, cleaning, changing diapers, and carting kids to and from school then finding the most efficient and effective exercises is critical. So, which cardio exercises burn the most calories? Fitness experts say the answer is not exactly as clear cut as most people think. When it comes to cardio training there are two major categories: “Slow and Steady” and “High Intensity.” The former consists of low intensity exercises that help preserve your joints and are done for roughly 60 minutes at a time. In … Continue reading

Fitness Journal – Strength Training Today

Today’s workout focused primarily on strength training. Cardiovascular workouts are important I will walk my mile or more as needed. In the meanwhile, we start out with the warm-up and limbering stretches. Comfortable clothes are required and I didn’t both with shoes, most of what I was about to do I do at home and on the carpet, bare feet are more comfortable and I can use my toes for counter balance as necessary. (Try it sometime to see if you are more comfortable doing some strength training without shoes). I have my heart rate monitor, but I don’t pay … Continue reading

Women’s Fitness: Target Your Hips

The sad part about being a woman is that we carry most of our excess weight on our hips, tummy, thighs and bottom end. Many people think that those are the hardest areas to lose weight off of, but the truth is – anywhere you want to trim excess inches is usually the hardest area. There’s an old saying that the first place you gain weight is the last place you lose it. But today, let’s talk about our hips and trimming excess inches off of them. There are plenty of specific area exercises that you can do to target … Continue reading

Spring Forward to Action 2007: What Are We Doing?

It’s that time, time for us to spring forward to action. Well, actually the spring forward happened earlier this year than it typically does. In fact, I know a lot of people who were thrown by the clocks turning forward on March 11th. It was early enough that it stayed dark here until after 7:30 in the morning and if that doesn’t throw you, I don’t know what will. So here we are, a month later, to kick off our Spring Forward to Action fitness challenge. Last year, our Spring Forward challenge involved a detailed workout plan for every day … Continue reading

Fitness DVD Review – Shrink Your Female Fat Zones

It’s that time again for one of our fitness DVD reviews and I know it’s been a while, but I think you’ll enjoy taking a look at Shrink Your Female Fat Zones and maybe I’m being petty but for whatever reason, the title of this Denise Austin workout reminds me of the tired argument between kids over what’s a girl toy and what’s a boy toy – but then, that’s neither here nor there. Synopsis Denise Austin has created quite a few workout DVDs in her tenure as a fitness guru. She’s popular, she’s got a great attitude and I … Continue reading

How to Weight Train for Running & Cycling

Last week, we discussed the fact that runners and cyclists need to weight train in order to maximize their performance and to get the most out of their workouts. Running and cycling are both aerobic training sports and while they can help you stay fit and lose weight, you don’t train your muscles up evenly and that can lead to injuries. I got a note from a reader after that blog that wanted more information on how to weight train if you’re already running and cycling, so this is an attempt to answer that request prior to our Dear Heather … Continue reading

Jazzercise: It isn’t What You Think

Before I had my boys and when I was a single woman, I started Jazzercising. I will admit I did so hesitantly, thinking it would be me, my friend who was the same age as I am, and a bunch of elderly women. I had this preconceived notion of what Jazzercise was like, think Jane Fonda workouts in the late 1980’s and that is what I imagined. I grudgingly agreed to go with my friend because she really wanted to lose weight and she needed an exercise buddy. So I went. I paid for one visit, thinking that I would … Continue reading

20 Minute Power Abs

20 minutes a day can really help you with your abdominal. For those of you who feel like your mid-section is in the worst shape, be aware that health wise excess abdominal fat is actually the worst kind of fat period. The mid-section houses two of your most important organs involved in fat metabolism and the process of sugar. Your liver and your kidneys can actually become ‘squished’ in too much abdominal fat and this reduces their effectiveness. Women, especially, are in danger of type 2 diabetes because of excessive abdominal fat according to the American Dietetic Association. Now to … Continue reading
