Feel the Burn Cleaning Your Home

Yesterday I discussed how many calories could be burned by common outdoor chores. Today I wanted to look into how many calories one burns doing common housework. No one has to tell me that housework burns calories. I feel the burn carrying laundry baskets from my upstairs to my basement and back up again. Sometimes the only thing that gets me through it is thinking of the calories I am burning. In fact, many household duties turned into calorie burning exercises make it more manageable. I am never sure how many calories I am burning but it feels like a … Continue reading

Do Your Kids Need More Exercise?

Health experts would answer that question with a rousing “yes,” and now they have even more evidence to support their assertions. A new study found that more than half a million 4-year-olds are obese. Even more disturbing, according to researchers, is the finding that nearly a third of American Indian children are obese. The study’s lead author noted that the findings are “of major concern” among children so young given that obese individuals are at very high risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, cancers, joint diseases and other health problems. If you are concerned that your child may be … Continue reading

Burning Calories at Your Desk

While most of us pack on the calories while working at our desks (the occasional cookie, donut, or an entire BLT sandwich) there are some companies that are actually helping employees burn calories while on the job. A few weeks back I saw a report on ABC News about a Minneapolis law firm that has done away with traditional oak wood desk and leather chair combos and replaced them with treadmills and raised computer stands so employees can type and workout without leaving their cubicles. The report also profiled a guy from Illinois who has adopted the same concept in … Continue reading

So You Want to Burn Fat?

For the past few days I’ve been detailing exercises that burn serious calories. After all, if you are going to drag yourself out of bed at the crack of dawn to workout you might as well get the most from your efforts. The vast majority of us exercise to lose weight, which is done by burning calories, but what about the unwanted fat we want to shed? To answer that question we must differentiate between “aerobic” activity and “anaerobic” activity. “Aerobic” means “with oxygen.” When you are partaking in low-intensity exercises your breathing rate and oxygen use can keep up … Continue reading

Crank Up Your Cardio to Burn More Calories

If you are a busy parent with limited opportunities to exercise on your own then you know how important it is to make the most of each and every workout session. Prior to having my daughter I worked out at least two hours a day roughly six days a week. These days I am lucky if I can get in my marathon training four to five days a week. Knowing that I have to make the most of every limited opportunity I’m given I’ve had to crank up the intensity of my runs. A few of the running club members … Continue reading

Let’s face it; the majority of us exercise because we want to lose weight. Sure, some folks workout to maintain their weight, while others adopt a fitness regime to combat the signs of aging. In my previous blog I provided a list of some of the best calorie burning exercises available. The Best Exercises to Burn Major Calories

If you are a busy parent, who spends his or her day in a chaotic hurricane cooking, cleaning, changing diapers, and carting kids to and from school then finding the most efficient and effective exercises is critical. So, which cardio exercises burn the most calories? Fitness experts say the answer is not exactly as clear cut as most people think. When it comes to cardio training there are two major categories: “Slow and Steady” and “High Intensity.” The former consists of low intensity exercises that help preserve your joints and are done for roughly 60 minutes at a time. In … Continue reading

Getting It Done: 10,000 Steps!

I have been clocking my distance with a pedometer and I can honestly say that I am doing 10,000 steps a day. I am not going to say it did not take much effort, but the majority of the steps really did not. I am an active, borderline hyper type and sitting still is just not my thing. Relaxing on the couch and watching a movie is difficult for me to do. I am not much of a television person anyway so that does not help. I have a busy job at work and my feet hit the floor at … Continue reading

We would all love to be thin or at least our “average” weight. We all want to look healthy and feel healthy. To diet and lose excess weight under these conditions is a good step toward becoming a healthier and more attractive person. Sometimes though dieting attempts become obsessive and the mentality of the person dieting becomes confused. Bulimia is one of several eating disorders. When a bulimic attempts to diet, like most of us, they find … Continue reading
