Our Day of Free Fun

Because we are on a limited budget, it sometimes takes a bit of creativity to have low-cost fun, and free is even better. Today was a good summer day in the free department for the kids. After an early morning dentist appointment (free, but not necessarily fun), we headed over to our local library for their Tuesday morning program. Today, the kids got to make their own bubble solution and wands and also experience making giant bubbles. We went home with the wands and a recipe to make our own giant bubble solution. We took advantage of the trip to … Continue reading

Ways to Spice Up Your Easter Party

Add some spring to your step and kick up your upcoming Easter get-together with extended family and friends.  The following fun-filled activities are designed to supplement traditional egg hunts without breaking the bank or forcing you to your breaking point: Craft Stations:  Before the annual Easter egg hunt gets underway have kids partake in some craft making.  This can be done by setting up various stations in your home.  Not only do these project centers keep kids busy while the adults mingle, but they also ensure your youngest guests have something to take home besides a bunch of chocolate.  An … Continue reading

More Thoughts on the Disney-Lucasfilm Buyout

Now I’ve had some time to think about it, I have more sophisticated thoughts about the Disney-Lucasfilm buyout. The idea that I’m struggling with the most is that Disney wants to keep releasing more films every few years into infinity. One day soon, the original trilogy will be buried under a pile of new films, and I just feel so strange about that. According to George Lucas, the script treatments for episodes 7-9 are totally original; they won’t follow any specific plots from the novelized extended universe. Disney’s most likely going to follow Lucas’ scripts, but if it keeps making … Continue reading

DIY Olympic Fun

The opening ceremonies of the 2012 Summer Olympics get underway in just a few days. However, you don’t need to travel to London in order to get in on all the athletic fun. Kids, who are inspired by the mega-athletes they view on TV, can replicate the record-breaking moves at home. Here are a few ideas to get your children into the spirit of the 2012 Summer Games: Relay Races: Foot races are one of the oldest and most popular Olympic Games. What’s more, they are also one of the easiest for kids to participate in. Simply collect some small … Continue reading

Our Kids Need More Exercise

Are your kids active enough? We all need exercise every day, do your kids get enough? I was always concerned about Hailey’s activity level after I got divorced. When I was married we lived in a house in a nice neighborhood, I knew my neighbors, Hailey knew the kids, we had lived there since she was three. I felt safe letting her go outside to play with other kids. Once I got divorced that changed. We lived in a series of apartments and although they were always in what I felt where good areas, I didn’t feel safe letting her … Continue reading

More Filters to Change

Just when I think I could possibly be getting on top of things, along comes something else. I’m running horribly behind this month due in part to a dog I rescued who has terrible separation anxiety. That one little thing is making every day a cleaning nightmare, if she is left in the house, she tears up everything in sight, if she is put in a crate she drools so much from anxiety that a river meets me when I get home. The joys of having a pet. Anyway, on to the point of this post, I thought I had … Continue reading

Fun Item: Brick Stix

My children love Legos. I love Legos. Who doesn’t love Legos? Legos are fun, allows the child to be in control and spark the imagination. I have used Legos for school lessons multiple times. One of my favorite ways to use Legos is for narration or story telling. Legos can be anything in the hands of a child. My Lego loving house was certainly introduced to a creative new product which brings playing with Legos to a new level of play. BrickStix. BrickStix is one of those products that have all the right moves and none of the wrong ones. … Continue reading

Making Cleaning Fun- Or At Least Tolerable

I wouldn’t say that it’s fun to clean house but if you can’t look forward to it then it should be at least tolerable. I don’t know anyone who wakes up in the morning excited to clean toilets, I know I certainly don’t but I have found ways to make it a little less painful. Over the years of keeping house (29 of them if anyone is keeping track) a few things that I’ve found help make housecleaning more enjoyable. • Music- for me, the louder the better, and something with a good beat. I’ve always listened to country but … Continue reading

Have Fun With Goodie Bags

I heart Oriental Trading Company. If it weren’t for the catalog-based business I would have never been able to pull-off my daughter’s circus-themed seventh birthday party. Of course, when you’ve got 30 six and seven year olds running amuck you don’t really need elephants, clowns and acrobats to create a circus-like atmosphere. I shudder to think how our pint-sized guests would have reacted if they were forced to leave the party goodie bag-less. Oh the horror! Fortunately, my child’s birthday had a traditional theme. Consequently, it was easy for me to purchase a bunch of trinkets from Oriental Trading Company. … Continue reading
