My Daughter & I Went for a Walk

A few weeks ago, I told you about Our Little 1-Mile Walk and I just realized that with all the other excitement, I didn't get a chance to bring you up to speed on how our 1-mile walk went, so I thought I would take a few minutes to talk about it here.

"So when do we get to walk another mile, Mommy?"

Our Local Community

The 1-Mile Walk and 5-K Run was sponsored by our local homeowner's association and was designed to promote community and cooperation. The morning of the walk dawned cool and wet. It rained right up until about 30 minutes before the walk and then the skies cleared up to a crystal blue and the sun began to shine warmly. There was a strong breeze that kept it from being hot (we had a massive windstorm later in the day, but that was well after the walk).

My daughter was excited to head up to her elementary school where the walk was scheduled to begin. Her computer teacher was joining us for the walk and we made it up to the school, signed in and got our numbers. We said hello to a large number of people we knew from our neighborhoods and our school and I was pleasantly surprised by just how many of these other moms, dads, teachers and children that we did know.

The 9 o'clock Kick Off

At 9 a.m. the walkers lined up and we received our instructions on the path we were going to take. I got a good laugh when I realized that the halfway marker was actually our house. Of course it was, we live exactly one half-mile from the school. It tickled my daughter because she trooped off to lead the way when they said go. The walk was pretty pleasant and straightforward. And we completed the mile in about 22 minutes.

My daughter got winded on the last quarter mile and our pace slowed from the middle of the pack to the end of the pack. I think we would have completed in 17 or 18 minutes if not for her shorter legs. Still, 22 minutes is pretty great for a mile walk for a 6 year old. As we turned in our numbers for ranking, my daughter got a big bottle of water and drank nearly all of it. A few minutes later, we packed up and headed up to Starbuck's to have coffee with a friend.

As soon as we were in the car and on our way, my daughter's voice floated up from the backseat "So when do we get to walk another mile, Mommy?"
