The All-or-Nothing Person

I don’t know if you can relate to this, but I tend to be an all-or-nothing kind of person.  Although this can be a good trait, for the most part it stands in the way.  This is especially true with fitness.  Thankfully I am learning to overcome this mentality. Here is what the all-or-nothing person looks like.  You intend to start up an exercise program on Monday.  But something happens and your schedule for the day gets screwed up. The all-or-nothing person’s response isn’t “I will just start on Tuesday.”  No, they decide to wait until the following Monday. Here … Continue reading

For Every Excuse, a Solution

I have heard many women complain that they don’t have the time to exercise. They work, take care of their home and families. There aren’t enough hours in the day to do all that you want to do. But I think the key here is what you “want” to do. How about what you “should” do? I want to do a lot of things. I want to finish the cross-stitch project I have been working on for three years now. I want to take a weekend away with my husband. I want to put aside one day a month to … Continue reading

Who Has Time?

How often have you said, “I don’t have time to exercise”? Well the truth is…we have lots of time. It really all comes down to what we do with it. Think about this…we have 10,080 minutes in a week, which equates to 168 hours each week. That is a lot of minutes and hours. Yet we tend to fill it with important and not so important stuff. We fill our time with necessary and unnecessary things. At some point we have to make some hard decisions. What things can go so that we can focus on our health? How much … Continue reading

What Impacts Your Motivation to Exercise?

It’s interesting how the weather seems to affect my motivation to exercise. For nearly two weeks, the state I live in (Wisconsin) has been experiencing unseasonably warmer temperatures. In fact, I believe we broke record high temps on at least two days. It didn’t even feel like spring, it felt more like summer as we hit the 80’s. It was invigorating and got me outside taking a walk nearly every evening. Then this past weekend the temperature started to drop. As of the writing of this blog, we are only at 37 degrees, which is still considered to be pretty … Continue reading

I Must Exercise

In the hustle and bustle of my busy life sometimes I forget to take care of myself. Everyday it seems like my to do list gets longer and longer and time for me gets pushed farther and farther to the bottom. Winter is especially hard, I get a little depressed in the winter, nothing bad, just a little SAD (seasonal affective disorder) but one major downside is that I get very lazy. Everything becomes just too much work. My house falls apart, I don’t cook and I certainly don’t exercise. All I want to do is lay on the couch … Continue reading

Don’t Let Winter Become an Excuse to Not Exercise

Lately I have been thinking a lot about spring. I am thinking about sunshine and warmth. I am thinking about those walks I love to take. For some reason the thought of warmer days seems more motivating when it comes to exercise. The long, cold, dreary days of winter can cause the coach potato in all of us to seep in. I seem to have more time for movies and TV shows during the winter. Actually, it’s because I’m not a winter person. I don’t enjoy the cold and I certainly don’t enjoy the snow, despite living in a state … Continue reading

Squeezing in Exercise When You Sit All Day

Sitting all day long is not good for your health. So if you work in an office or any type of job where you are sitting for long periods of time, you will need to get creative. Since I work from home, spending several hours most days of the week writing, it can be very easy to get comfortable and stay comfortable. I used to workout before I started my assignments. I figured it was better to get it out of the way but now I have changed things up. I try to get in 30 to 40 minutes of … Continue reading

Something Is Better Than Nothing

We sometimes receive conflicting information when it comes to exercise and physical activity. We are told that a little bit is better than nothing. But then we are also told that if you aren’t engaging in a certain amount of exercise or physical activity every week, there is no benefit to your body. So which is it? If I don’t spend 5 to 6 days a week, 30 minutes a day in some form of exercise, is it pointless to do anything? According to new guidelines issued by the “American College of Sports Medicine,” although they recommend at least 150 … Continue reading

Exercise For Free!

In this economy it might be hard to afford a gym or have sessions with a personal trainer. Sometimes lack of a gym might be used as an excuse not to exercise. However, regardless of your financial situation, there is always a way to exercise. I currently don’t belong to a gym. I attend a twice a week workout class at the local community college which averages to about $5 a class. Although I enjoy my class, two days a week is not enough for me to get in all the cardio I need. I have come up with two … Continue reading

Excuses, excuses…everybody has some. Whenever we face doing something we know we should but don’t really want to, we can come up with all kinds of excuses. And this has never been truer than in the area of fitness. So let’s take a look at the top 5 excuses for not exercising and how to overcome them.
