Frugal Living Week in Review: October 29th Through November 4th

Is it getting chilly where you live? The weather is certainly getting brisk here, and the heat seems to always be on. I’ve been setting the thermostat to about 64, and bundling everyone up with sweaters. I think we are getting used to the cooler temperatures, because when my husband comes home and pushed the heat to 70, the rest of us complain that it is too hot. How have you been saving money this week? If you could use some ideas, then why not take a look at all of the articles we posted here in the past seven … Continue reading

Walk to School Day Tomorrow

Tomorrow is National Walk to School Day. We talked about this last year and I’m a little flummoxed that it’s here again so quickly. It feels like just yesterday that my daughter and I were strolling along with a few hundred others in the walk to school effort in our own neighborhood. She still has the sticker they gave her last year. She came home with the flyer from school yesterday and was bouncing up and down. She wanted to meet several of her friends and walk with them on the walk to school effort. I could go too, but … Continue reading

October’s Reflections

I always enjoy sitting down to write about the reflections from the past month. It allows me to consider if I have really been growing in my faith in the Lord, or if I have remained stagnant over this period. As I sit down to write about October’s reflections the first thing I thought about was how quickly October flew by. It always seems that as we quickly approach the holiday season we get busier and busier. This chaos is a great reason to sit back and look at the past month and see how we have grown. I would … Continue reading

Walk to School Day

Today is International Walk to School Day and my daughter’s school is celebrating it along with many other schools across the nation. I had to laugh when she came home from school yesterday wearing a sticker telling us she needed to walk to school today because it was important. 4 days out of 5, we walk anyway. So it’s amusing to hear the kids tell me how important it is to walk to school today. Increasing Our Activity Levels Walking to school is healthy for kids, provided they are not walking alone. Unfortunately, in this day and age – safe … Continue reading

Does your Daughter get Sexually Harassed at School?

Sexual harassment can take many different forms, however, all actions are based on the social construction of inherited male power and gender conditioning. Unsolicited and unreciprocated male sexual behavior, directed toward females, is often regarded by some as a normal male practice. Such learned functioning undermines the autonomy of women and girls. This cannot remain unchallenged because it is hurting our daughters and affecting their learning at school. Sexual harassment occurs in school settings too, between male teacher to female student, male student to female teacher and from student to student. Australian research has shown a dominant school culture where … Continue reading

October is Walk to School Month

We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.-Winston Churchill October 4th is International Walk to School Day. This year, however, communities can choose to celebrate Walk to School for a day, a week or a month. This decision was made by the International Walk to School Committee that has several countries participating and working together to inspire interest in this event. Many U.S. communities and school districts are encouraging kids to walk to school on October 4th. The idea is to promote walking and bicycling in order to change communities and the … Continue reading

How to Handle Bullying

October is a month that has been dedicated to the anti-bullying initiative, however, this is something that should be addressed continually throughout the year. It is something we are all familiar with, but when your child becomes the victim of it, it can be difficult to decide how to handle the situation. Teach your children early on that it’s not okay for anyone to treat them poorly. If one of the kids hurt their feelings at school, be sure to tell them that just because someone said something mean about them doesn’t make it true. Let them know that it … Continue reading

Confession: I Love Christmas Creep

I love Christmas Creep. You know what it is. It’s the Christmas carols playing on the radio since before Thanksgiving. It’s the lights that have been up since Halloween. It’s the house that I walked by the other day in the dark. I fell in love with the owners right away. You see, they had their Halloween spiderwebs up with Christmas lights underneath. Pure joy. I also love the baking. I mean, come on, who doesn’t like baking? I have type 1 diabetes and eat a gluten free diet that incorporate large quantities of veggies and fruits, and I still … Continue reading
