Eating Disorders – Mixed Messages

As I was reading up on some recent research I came across two related to eating disorders/weight, and while reading them I realized how many mixed messages we are sending. One was about a spike in eating disorders in older women while the other focused on the link between body weight and personality. While I found the information in both articles interesting, there were pieces that were almost contradictory in nature. It got me thinking about the messages we send out about eating disorders. We complain about living in a culture obsessed with thinness, and often blame the media and … Continue reading

Like Mother, Like Daughter?

Many people believe that a daughter will grow to become very much like her mother, in terms of personality, personal preference, and physicality. It seems that there might be something to this little piece of folk wisdom. Researchers in London have been studying to find out how much of the similarities between mother and daughter are due to genetics. It turns out that genetics play a big part. Recently, researchers from the United States, China, and Austria found a genetic mutation that can be passed down from a mother to her offspring through mitochondrial DNA. This particular genetic mutation contributes … Continue reading

Defining Your Exercise Personality

Do you gravitate towards certain types of gym equipment more than others? Do you struggle to stick with your exercise routine? Micheal Phelps, ADHD, and Our Homeschooling Journey

I just read an excellent article on Michael Phelps that talks about his problems with ADHD and how it ultimately helped to excel in swimming. The article talks specifically about the ability of the ADHD person to hyperfocus when it comes to learning something they are interested in. As an unmediated adult living with ADD (I am less hyperactive these days), I can relate. The first time I heard the word “hyperfocus” it was from my husband. He complained that when I found a new interest that I would literally shut everything else out and focus solely on that topic. … Continue reading

Fitness on a Shoe-String Budget

In a time where rising gas rates are making everyone rethink their plans (from vacation travel to how to get to work), finding a way to put fitness on a shoe-string budget is a good idea. While you may think that not having money to join a gym, much less get to the gym would limit your options, the best news of the day is that a fitness budget doesn’t have to cost anything outside of a few dollars to invest in a good pair of shoes if you don’t have one and maybe some resistance bands or a balance … Continue reading

Lack of Sleep Makes Babies Fat

We all know that not getting enough sleep can make you fat but according to a new study published by none other than Harvard University, babies (ages 6 months and older) who sleep less than 12 hours per day are at an increased risk of being obese as preschoolers. Researchers noted that the effect was heightened when coupled with television viewing. Children who slept the least and watched the most television were most likely to become obese. I have no doubt that lack of sleep and obesity are linked. The body does essential reparation while we are sleeping and studies … Continue reading

Imagination Counts in Exercise

Recently, during a stint subbing, one of the children asked me what imagination was. Imagination is a huge word and we talk to our kids about their imagination all the time, yet as adults – we don’t really talk about our imagination. At least, we don’t talk about it much. Imagination is a wonderful facility that humans have. We utilize our imagination in many different ways whether we are suspending our disbelief when watching a movie, reading a book or creating our own stories. But we can use imagination in many other ways too. Music and Imagination Now I am … Continue reading
