Score Big Bling on Your Next Vacation

Have you ever dreamed of being showered with diamonds? If so, you probably figured the bling would come courtesy of your sweetheart, not a chain hotel. But that’s exactly where you can win a whole lot of sparkle beginning September 28th. Holiday Inn locations in the United Kingdom are celebrating their 60th anniversary by placing real diamonds worth nearly $40,000 under select guests’ pillows. The diamonds will be left in hotel rooms throughout Europe, including Spain, Germany, France, Turkey, Belgium and the Netherlands. What’s more, you don’t have to stay more than one night in order to win. As added … Continue reading

Summer Vacation Exercise Tips

Don’t let your annual summer road trip put the brakes on your exercise routine. Traveling shouldn’t be an excuse to stop working out. Rather, look at your trip as a way to spice up your fitness regime. For example, if you are an avid elliptical fan, but the hotel you are staying at only has a treadmill and a stationary bike, then give those a try. Another option: hit the hotel’s pool or go for a jog at a nearby park. Doing so will not only allow you to get in some great sightseeing, but you’ll be burning calories at … Continue reading

Dear Heather … Summer Fitness Vacations

Dear Heather, I remember reading in your blog a while back about fitness vacations. I was actually thinking that this would be a good plan for my family (we have 4 boys ranging in age of 5 to 15) and I think a fitness vacation might inspire my sons to stay active while spending some time with their Dad and I. But I’m not sure where to start my planning. Any ideas? -Mom on the Move Dear Mom on the Move, First let me say hats off to you, I have a hard time keeping up with 1 girl, I … Continue reading

Personal Fitness Challenge – How Does Your Family Measure Up?

When I was at my daughter’s gymnastics class this morning, I started talking to one of the other parents. Our daughters attend the same kindergarten class together and we were doing what moms do – swapping stories about our children. We were talking about the fact that we encouraged our kids to participate in dance classes, gymnastics and more, not to make them into professional athletes but instead to promote an active lifestyle and the enjoyment of it. That got me to thinking. Fitness is Really a Family Affair In an effort to promote fitness for yourself, consider the example … Continue reading

Five for Fitness: Tuesday, September 5th

Today is Tuesday, September the 5th and here in Texas it has finally cooled off. At least in my part of Texas and since we’ve been under brutal heat and severe water restrictions, the cooling off is literally a breath of fresh air. In just a couple of weeks, we’ll celebrate the Autumn Equinox – the time when the hours of night and the hours of day are equal and then the nights will gradually grow longer, the days even colder and it will be Winter. Do I sound as though I am romanticizing it? Probably. But I do enjoy … Continue reading

Marriage and the New Year

I don’t know what makes me so popular today, but here it is, only nine thirty in the morning, and I’ve already received e-mails from two young people who are getting married, one next week and the other in March. Coincidentally, or perhaps not, my conversation with each had to do with goal setting and how to incorporate their new spouse in to their goals. I remember when I was contemplating marriage—how hard it was for me to get used to the idea that I wasn’t going to be an individual anymore, but part of a team—and how I had … Continue reading

National Resources Defense Council Releases Most Polluted U.S. Beaches List – Part 1

You think only the Gulf Coast beaches are bad due to oil pollution? Maybe so, but no southern beach cracked the Top 10 most polluted U.S. beaches according to the National Resources Defense Council. About 3,000 beaches, bays, and lakes were looked at in the Testing the Waters 2010 report, which was released yesterday. In 2009, there were 18,682 beach closings and advisories for various reasons including human and animal waste and storm runoff. While there was a special supplement for closing and advisories for beaches affected by the BP oil spill, some of the most polluted beaches may surprise … Continue reading
