Walking vs. Running

Let’s have a little fun this morning with the difference between walkers and runners. In all honesty, there one is not better than the other, but if you ask a runner – they will say running is bracing, physically challenging and it helps them to focus their minds and their bodies on the target goal whatever the target is. Walkers on the other hand have no real interest in running, but they find walking whether it’s fitness walking, power walking or more to be the ideal workout. So What’s Better? I can say it till I’m blue in the face, … Continue reading

My Daughter & I Went for a Walk

A few weeks ago, I told you about Our Little 1-Mile Walk and I just realized that with all the other excitement, I didn’t get a chance to bring you up to speed on how our 1-mile walk went, so I thought I would take a few minutes to talk about it here. “So when do we get to walk another mile, Mommy?” Our Local Community The 1-Mile Walk and 5-K Run was sponsored by our local homeowner’s association and was designed to promote community and cooperation. The morning of the walk dawned cool and wet. It rained right up … Continue reading

How Many Calories Do You Burn While Walking

When it comes to a walking program, I know some people are resistant because they do not believe they will burn enough calories when they are walking. Truth be told, jogging and cycling may be higher intensity sports, but higher intensity does not always mean you will burn the most calories you can because you may not be able to perform a high intensity exercise for a long period of time. Weight also plays a factor in the number of calories you burn – for a person that is overweight, they actually expend more calories in the effort than someone … Continue reading

Walking Fitness: Your Form

Earlier, we talked about lifestyle walking and that of the different forms of walking it’s the easiest to perform for beginners and advanced enthusiasts alike. However, it’s important to recognize that just because walking is easy and that a casual stroll is simple enough to do – that form is still an important component of your workout. Your Form Your form is important because it not only helps you to achieve your fitness goals, but it also helps to minimize your risk of injury. Now before you wonder what kinds of injuries you can sustain while walking, I’d check out … Continue reading

Good morning and welcome to Saturday. Whew, am I glad it’s the end of the week! I’m tired. There are a lot of things going on in my life right now, some good, some great and some that are not as bad as they could be. My Little Inspiration: Our Local 1-Mile Walk

I’ve told you about my daughter’s current project at school, the Hoops for Hearts she is still working on raising her money for the American Heart Association and she is very excited. This week she’ll actually shoot her hoops for the heart and she’s been practicing diligently – it’s always entertaining to me to see how hard she is working and I am very proud of her. Flyer in the Mail We received a flyer in the mail this weekend from our local Homeowner’s Association. They are sponsoring a 1-mile walk and a 5k run. The walk/run is about building … Continue reading

Planning Ahead – Want to Walk a Mile?

There are all kinds of reasons you may want to walk a mile. According to my grandmother, if you wanted to walk a mile then you should just put your shoes on and start walking. In this case, she’s not wrong. Walking is one of the easiest of the cardiovascular activities and can be performed by just about anyone, from the most sedentary individual to the most active. I like to tell people, if you can walk out your front door and get to the mailbox. You’re already making your first strides towards good exercise and good health. So you … Continue reading

Disney’s Quiet Florida Escape

Sometimes it feels like the only Disney attraction I talk about are the parks, especially Walt Disney World in Orlando. It’s one of the most popular locations and a lot of interesting promotions and events are happening there right now, so I do want to share them with everyone here at families.com. But for those who might tire of the hectic crowds, noise, and cement pathways of an amusement park, Disney has an entirely different option: the Disney Wilderness Preserve. The Walt Disney Company created the Wilderness Preserve in 1992, purchasing the 8500-acre Walker Ranch in Poinciana, Florida. In partnership … Continue reading

Fitness Journal – Stressing Your Pedometer

Good evening, sorry for the lateness of the hour, but I wanted to get this journal entry in before I went to bed. Today was another run to get things done both around the house and in the yard. I’m having oral surgery on Friday to extract the painful wisdom tooth and it’s next door neighbor that’s been infected for a while now. Personally, I can’t wait for the surgery, but in the meanwhile – I need to get things done so that I can rest afterwards. Pedometer Stress I’ve described using my pedometer before and we’ve talked many times … Continue reading
