Rewards for Exercising

What would motivate you to exercise more? What about receiving some extra cash? That doesn’t do it? Then what if you had to give money to someone else if you didn’t exercise? Hmm, now that just might do it! Well if you need something to boost that drive to exercise, you might want to try out a couple of new apps called “RunKeeper” and “GymPact.” The app “RunKeeper” keeps track of your workout performance over a period of time. The app “GymPact” provides rewards and punishments, based on the results of the “RunKeeper” app. So if you exercise and meet … Continue reading

Using Rewards as Motivation

Rewards are very motivating. When I used to work as a preschool teacher, I found it to be a great way to gain cooperation. I have used it as a mother and in a variety of other settings. Children aren’t the only ones however, who enjoy rewards. Adults love to be rewarded for hard work as well. A raise, an extra day off or a promotion are great ways of being rewarded in our careers. At home we might find a reward being the one who gets to pick the family movie. There are all different ways that rewards can … Continue reading

Fitness Is a Journey

Fitness isn’t a one time deal. You don’t try it one day and suddenly develop a habit or lifestyle of fitness. Rather, fitness is more like a journey. Think about journeys you have taken in life. First, consider a literal journey you have gone on. It usually consists of a lot work preparing for it. You have to plan, prepare and pack. By the time you are done, you are almost wiped out. Fitness tends to start off this way. You plan what you will do, you try and prepare your body and you pack on some exercises…only to find … Continue reading

Utah Hospitals Change Eligibility For Cheaper Insurance

A chain of hospitals in Utah that are owned by HCA MountainStar is going to be doing something unique with the employer sponsored health insurance that the group offers to its employees. Starting next year, there will be separate health insurance options available to workers, depending on whether or not they submitted to a health screening. Six hospitals in Utah that are owned by HCA MountainStar are changing their eligibility for some employer sponsored health insurance plans, starting in 2012. Employees will be asked to submit to annual screenings. I’m not sure if this new idea qualifies as a form … Continue reading

Preventing Type 2 Diabetes

Type 1 Diabetes is when the person produces no insulin. Type 2 Diabetes is when a person does not product enough insulin. Type 1 diabetes is considered an autoimmune disease and it is thought to be inherited. Type 2 diabetes is often called adult onset diabetes as it occurs later in life. It is thought that being overweight is a leading contributor to this type of diabetes. While both seem to have genetic factors, Type 2 is often treated with and prevented by losing weight, exercising and healthy eating. While Type 2 Diabetes is sometimes referred to adult onset diabetes, … Continue reading

How to Stick to Your New Year’s Resolutions

The fresh start of a new year inspires lots of people to make New Year’s resolutions. Some of the most popular resolutions include losing weight/exercising more, saving money/managing debt, and stress reduction. What’s on your resolution list? According to the IHRSA (International Health, Racquet, and Sports Club Association), January is the biggest month for new gym memberships — New Year’s is a huge boost for the exercise industry. But as many as forty percent of those new signups stop going within the first three months. (Some experts say the number is even higher than forty percent!) We make these big, … Continue reading

Making Healthy and Reasonable Resolutions

It’s that time of year: time to start thinking about New Year’s resolutions. I like the idea of a fresh start for the New Year. But I don’t always stick with my resolutions. I think that’s because I try to make them too big and too broad. Know what I mean? Get in shape. Eat better. Exercise more. They’re kind of nebulous and easy to forget. According to USA.gov, the most popular New Year’s resolutions include: Losing weight/exercising more/getting into shape Eating better/eating right Managing debt/saving money Quitting smoking Reducing stress Getting a better job Getting a better education Travel … Continue reading
