Family Fitness with Your 5 to 10 Year Old

In my last blog I talked about family fitness with your toddler. In this blog I am going to be talking about family fitness with your 5 to 10 year old. This age range allows for a lot of fun opportunities. While you can enjoy a lot of the more common physical activities with this age group (playing catch, soccer, walking, etc.), you can also come up with some really creative ideas for incorporating exercise. One idea is to go on a scavenger hunt. Now this might not sound like a way to incorporate fitness but that’s what makes it … Continue reading

A Game For Your Surname

Sometimes when you want to break away from your regular family history research, you can find genealogy-related things to do just for amusement. For example, today I did a Google search for my surname to see what the other Berthiaumes out there are like. We are a diverse bunch, and I am sure that all of us share the common frustration that most people can not pronounce our name correctly, let alone spell it. Who are the Berthiaumes that I found with my Google search? I do not believe that I am related to any of the people that I … Continue reading

Who Rocks Your Workout?

It’s nearly impossible to go to a gym these days and not be surrounded by runners, weightlifters and stair climbers who aren’t sporting iPods or other personal music devices. It seems everyone has their favorite tunes that help pump them up as they hit the treadmill or sweat it out at the Smith machine. For some, Madonna gets them motivated to move. Others rely on Pink Floyd, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith or Pantera to getting them pumped up. Studies show listening to loud music helps some exercisers to push through the pain and ignore inner voices that tell them their routine … Continue reading

Rock Your Workout

Do you listen to music while you exercise? If you do, then you might consider cranking up your tunes the next time you are feeling fatigued midway through your third set of tricep dips. According to a new study, women were able to pump up their workouts (especially strength training exercises) when they pumped up the volume on their iPods. Researchers say the female study participants performed a lot better and were happier when they were rocking out to loud tunes. The study’s results support a growing body of research suggesting that music is a real motivator for exercise. What’s … Continue reading

Motivate Yourself to Get Healthy with Fun!

A friend of mine got a Wii Fit as an anniversary present… and her excitement and enthusiasm was absolutely contagious! (Anybody have a Wii Fit they want to let me try?) I’ll be honest — I don’t usually feel excited and enthusiastic about exercising. I know it’s good for me. I know it helps my body stay healthy and flexible and strong. But exercise isn’t something I think of as fun. When healthy choices are chores, you’re less likely to stick with them (whether we’re talking about a diet or an exercise plan). But if you can make your lifestyle … Continue reading

Walking Barefoot is Good for Your Feet!

I love to be barefoot. As soon as I walk in the door, I take off my shoes — it’s a good way to keep contaminants out of the house, but I just do it because I’m more comfortable barefoot! Walking barefoot can actually be good for you. Wearing shoes can make your foot muscles weak; going barefoot can stretch and exercise your toes and arches. Walking barefoot also helps improve balance! (I do find that I have better balance without shoes — I once climbed some rocks at a lake and was surprised at how much easier it was … Continue reading

How to Protect Your Camera (From Yourself and Others)

I recently returned from a trip to Hawaii where my camera got in a serious workout snapping shots of everyone (including the dozen or so family member who flew in for our reunion) and everything (including my 3-year-old daughter trying to dangle her baby cousin from my dad’s recliner). My camera also took a beating during one of our trips to the beach and I had serious misgivings about how it would work for the remainder of our trip. Today I took it in to my local camera shop to get it assessed and have the technicians there give it … Continue reading

Put Kids to Work

My parents were huge proponents of the idiom:  “Idle hands are the devil’s playthings.” In other words, my mom and dad hated seeing their offspring sit around when there was work to be done.  And when you’re living in a home occupied by six people, there’s never a shortage of tasks to be completed. For me, summer meant tennis camp, swimming lessons and plenty of chores.  In my dad’s eyes, no job was too dirty for his little girl.  Looking back, I don’t begrudge my father for keeping me and my brothers busy during the dog days of summer.  In … Continue reading

Making Cleaning Fun- Or At Least Tolerable

I wouldn’t say that it’s fun to clean house but if you can’t look forward to it then it should be at least tolerable. I don’t know anyone who wakes up in the morning excited to clean toilets, I know I certainly don’t but I have found ways to make it a little less painful. Over the years of keeping house (29 of them if anyone is keeping track) a few things that I’ve found help make housecleaning more enjoyable. • Music- for me, the louder the better, and something with a good beat. I’ve always listened to country but … Continue reading

Latest Hollywood Craze: Drumstick Smashing

I’m always amazed by the power behind a drummer. They bang at those drums with every ounce of strength they have, sometimes for hours at a time. It not only produces a cool sound but it looks like a great workout. Well what do you know? Banging drums has become one of the latest crazes to hit Hollywood. First it was pole dancing, then it was Zumba and now it is drumstick-smashing. The drumsticks are either wood or weighted and participants in the class will repeatedly hit the ground to fast-paced music such as rock or hip-hop. It works up … Continue reading
