Green up Your Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a day to honor all those that have served in the military. It is also a day when a lot of people will have family and friends over and grill out. (This image is from MorgueFile.) But, you can still be green while doing all of this. If you are going to visit a loved one’s grave, take real flowers. I know a lot of people tend to purchase plastic flowers because they last longer, but real flowers will naturally decompose, whereas plastic flowers will eventually have to be removed by the groundskeepers and who knows when … Continue reading

How Do I Get Rid of Stomach Fat?

Today’s blog will address a commonly asked question, “How do I get rid of stomach fat?” While most of us might think its doing exercises like crunches, abdominal exercises really don’t help to flatten your stomach. They actually help to strengthen your core and back. So just because you hear that a form of exercise is for the abdomen, don’t mistakenly believe it will tone the tummy area. Or don’t fall for some of the infomercials that spotlight exercise equipment which will “flatten your stomach in just one week.” What a lot of people fail to realize is that the … Continue reading

My Five Favorite Tips to Avoid Burnout

I did not listen to advice telling me to sleep when the baby sleeps. Instead I cleaned. I did not listen to the advice to take time for myself. Instead I planned more lessons and tried to squeeze in some work. I did not listen to advice telling me to not worry about the little messes. Rome wasn’t cleaned in a day. Instead I drove myself to the brink trying to get my overflowing “to-do” list done in one day. Then one day I found myself burned out. I was unable to move. Things that were once a joy were … Continue reading

Are You A Morning Person? You Might Want to Skip the Caffeine!

Uh oh. As a morning person who newly discovered coffee after the last of my babies was weaned, this is disturbing news. A new study published a couple of weeks ago in an online medical journal called Sleep Medicine found that the sleep of morning people is more affected by caffeine than the sleep of night owls. The study took college students and monitored their restlessness while they were sleeping, through the use of wrist devices. The students also had to record their caffeine use and their sleeping and waking times. The results found that those who were morning people, … Continue reading

Are Your Old Medications Stored in Your Fat Cells?

There are some medications that can cause problems with weight loss. Some drugs cause weight gain, and then store in your fat cells. When you lose weight, you burn fat. This can release that old drug right back into your bloodstream again. When I started the Atkins diet, it was primarily because I wanted to lose weight. There was a point in my life when I was quite thin. All that changed when I started using a birth control called depo provera. A study shows that women who use depo provera are twice as likely to become obese as a … Continue reading

How Your BMR Can Help You Lose Weight

Most of us know what BMI (body mass index) is and that it measures your height and weight to determine how much body fat you have. But have you heard of BMR (basal metabolic rate)? This is important to understanding how many calories you should be consuming each day. If you take in more calories than you should, you will gain weight. But if you take in fewer calories than you should, it will interfere with the body’s ability to burn fat. It could also lead to dysfunction in your blood pressure, heart rate and ability to digest foods. So … Continue reading

Another Reason Why Obesity Runs In Your Family

Obesity is one of the health conditions that runs in families. Some of the reasons why are environmental, and have to do with patterns of behavior that a person learns from his or her family. Other factors that influence obesity have to do with genetics. Researchers have found what they are calling the “master switch” gene for obesity. It has been established that if a person consumes more calories than the person burns, that this will lead to weight gain. We live in a society where it is easy to get large quantities of fast food for a very low … Continue reading

Barefoot Contessa Gets Burned

Food Network star Ina Garten, a.k.a. the “Barefoot Contessa,” is feeling the burn, but it’s not from logging extra miles on a treadmill. Obviously. Rather, the celebrity chef got scorched earlier this week when she was forced to down a huge helping of humble pie during the latest chapter of her Make-a-Wish Foundation debacle. As you remember from my previous post, Garten got herself into quite a pickle last month when she TWICE turned down a 6-year-old cancer patient’s request to meet her. The highfalutin Food Network star was then virtually flogged by millions of fans, who took to the … Continue reading

Lose 100 pounds in 3 hours! Sometimes it’s too good to be true.

When we read that we can make a million dollars on the internet working from home it raises a red flag. We have all heard the old adage that if it’s too good to be true it probably is, right? I’d say that is true about 9 out of 10 times if not 10 out of 10 times. No, I am not a pessimist and do have faith in miracles but I also know that where a dollar can be made a scam is brewing. When emotion is involved and the desire to quickly fix a situation one is more … Continue reading
